Abstract Hadal sediments are hotspots of microbial activity in the deep sea and exhibit strong biogeochemical gradients. But although these gradients widely assumed to exert selective forces on hadal communities, actual relationship between biogeochemistry, functional traits, community structure remains poorly understood. We tested whether conditions select for microbes based their genomic capacity respiration carbohydrate utilization via a metagenomic analysis over 153 samples from Atacama Trench region (max. depth = 8085 m). The obtained 1357 non-redundant genomes were affiliated with about one-third all known phyla, more than half belonging unknown genera. This indicated that capability withstand extreme hydrostatic pressure is phylogenetically widespread trait inhabited by diverse lineages. Although composition changed gradually sediment depth, changes not driven selection respiratory or degradation oxic nitrogenous zones, except case anammox bacteria nitrifying archaea. However, did communities ferruginous zone, where aerobic nitrogen respiring declined exponentially (half-life 125–419 years) replaced subsurface communities. These results highlight delayed response imposed redox zonation gradual shaped high-resilience slow growth seafloor.

The unique flavour and quality of Baijiu, a treasure traditional Chinese culture, has attracted increasing attention. pit mud is key component for forming the styles different Baijiu brands. Hence, conducting in-depth research on microbial colonies present in paramount enhancing intricate bouquets flavours. This study conducts comprehensive metagenomic examination ecosystem within Jiang-Nong Jianxiang fermentation mud. Within walls, six prominent species, each accounting more than 1% average relative abundance, emerged as contributors: Lentilactobacillus buchneri, Secundilactobacillus silagincola, Clostridium tyrobutyricum, parafarraginis, Ligilactobacillus acidipiscis, Lactobacillus acetotolerans. Conversely, at bases, four species surpassed this threshold: Petrimonas sp. IBARAKI, Methanosarcina barkeri, Methanofollis ethanolicus, Proteiniphilum propionicum. Notably, abundance walls impart superior saccharifying capabilities compared with those bases. consistently high enzymes belonging to glycoside hydrolases (GHs), glycosyltransferases (GTs), carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) across both bases highlight their importance fermentation. composition analysis results underscore important role microorganisms facilitating starch saccharification, ethyl caproate butyrate production, among other aromatic compounds. Microbes residing may be exhibited heightened propensity lactic acid generation, whereas inhabiting displayed stronger inclination towards caproic production. serves valuable reference future endeavours aimed harnessing resources refine optimize methodologies.

Subduction of the Cocos and Nazca oceanic plates beneath Caribbean plate drives upward movement deep fluids enriched in carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, iron along Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA). These compounds fuel diverse subsurface microbial communities that turn alter distribution, redox state, isotopic composition these compounds. Microbial community structure functions vary according to fluid delivery across arc, but less is known about how differ axis a convergent margin as geological features ( e . g ., extent volcanism subduction geometry) shift. Here, we investigate changes bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons geochemical analysis deeply-sourced seeps southern CAVA, where Ridge alters setting. We find shifts margin, with similar settings clustering together independently proximity sample sites. correlates variables such host rock type, maturity hydrothermal slab depth different segments CAVA. This reveals tight coupling between Earth processes activity, controlling margin.
