Abstract Background. To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on hospital admissions for psychiatric disorders, with a focus patients’ socioeconomic and demographic characteristics and/or diagnostic group type admission. Methods. Open cohort individuals aged ≥ 10 years resident at least two in one three large areas Italy. The outcome was first admission disorder (First Mental Health Admission: FMHA) during study period (January 2018–December 2021). Municipality residence, sex, census tract deprivation index, citizenship, were considered as covariates interest. Incidence rate ratios FMHAs estimated via an interrupted time series (ITS) analysis using step-change negative binomial model. Moreover, ITS conducted monthly number to temporal trend FMHAs. Results. Of 5,159,363 subjects enrolled, 11,171 had FMHA period. incidence decreased after outbreak pandemic, overall by level citizenship. Immigrants from high migration pressure countries (HMPCs) greater reduction COVID-19. A decrease observed all diagnoses, only exceptions being post-traumatic stress related which increased. Involuntary also increased dramatically pandemic. Younger age (< 34) associated higher risk hospitalization. In following post-outbreak (March 2020-December 2021), moderate but significant growing observed, although not reaching pre-pandemic levels. more robust increase found especially patients eating while disorders low Conclusions. considerable, some cases dramatic, hospitalizations disorders. However, effect appeared temporary, suggesting that expectations dramatic surge mental health issues due could have been overemphasized, short term. Longer follow-up surveys are needed.

We evaluated the differences between demographic (age, sex, nationality, employment, housing, schooling, support administrator), clinical (hospitalization reason, aggressive behaviour, length of hospitalization, psychiatric diagnosis and comorbidities, medications, discharge destination, "revolving door" hospitalizations) environmental (pre-and pandemic period) variables in voluntary (VHs) involuntary hospitalizations (IHs) an acute ward during a 6-year period. We retrospectively collected selected concerning subjects over 18 years age Service for Psychiatric Diagnosis Care Mental Health Drug Abuse Department Modena from 01/01/2017 to 31/12/2022.We observed progressive sharp reduction number VHs (n = 1800; 61.41%) stability IHs 1131; 38.59%), which 2022 became prevalent. highlighted following IHs: increase hospitalization (14.25 mean days ± 15.89 SD) comparison with (8.78 13.88 SD), increased more pandemic; behavior IHs, especially (Pearson Chi2 90.80; p 0.000); prevalence schizophrenia bipolar disorders 283.63; 0.000) frequent maladaptive social conditions among IHs.During observation period, we underscored trend increasingly reduced recourse VHs, whereas even pandemic. While COVID-19 impacted all aspects of health care and patient treatment, particularly for patients with mental health/substance use (MH/SU) concerns, research has suggested a concerning increase in the restraint seclusion (R/S) interventions, although results vary depending on facility type population. Thus, present study sought to explore COVID-related changes R/S interventions among presenting Ontario emergency departments (EDs) MH/SU complaints. To determine whether temporal clinical factors were associated during COVID, binary logistic regression models computed using data from National Ambulatory Care Reporting System database. We then compared both prevalence rates probability an event occurring ED visit before after onset COVID. The number visits which occurred concerns increased by 9.5%, while their odds 23% COVID onset. Similarly, (0.7% - 21.3% increase), first wave, greatest increases observed risk pre-COVID. intervention substantially EDs wave when strain healthcare system uncertainty about virus was arguably greatest. Patients already also showed largest probability, suggesting behavioural issues treatment this population These have potential inform existing policies mitigate risks future public emergencies general practice.

Pandemic-associated stress may have exacerbated preexisting mental health and substance use disorders (MH/SUD) caused new MH/SUD diagnoses which would be expected to lead an increase in visits emergency departments hospital admissions for these conditions. This study assessed whether the proportion of department encounters increased during first year COVID-19 pandemic United States. We conducted a longitudinal (interrupted time series) analysis 994,724 eligible identified by electronic query between January 1, 2016 March 31, 2021. Of these, 55,574 involved diagnosis. The pre-pandemic period was defined as 2020, April 2020 All statistical analyses were performed with R.No significant trend at baseline (rate ratio 1.00, 95% CI 0.99-1.01, p = 0.75) observed. However, onset temporally associated level relative overall 1.14, 1.06-1.21, p<0.001) no change 0.99, 0.90-1.10, 0.89).The pandemic-associated driven largely sustained numbers MH/ SUD despite decrease total encounters. Increased support care is needed vulnerable patients pandemics.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic lead to changes concerning access and type of clinical care available in healthcare systems facilities around the world. This study aims understand patterns acute psychiatric admissions periods before, during now after virus hit. Methods In this retrospective study, all episodes wards Hospital Júlio de Matos (age 18 or older) were obtained from January 2017 until March 2024. Three time frames considered: pre-pandemic (until 17th, 2020), April 30th, 2021), post-pandemic (from that date forward); comparing gender, age, diagnosis at discharge, length stay (LOS), number daily patients occupying hospital beds. Results 11146 identified (5706 pre-pandemic, 1283 pandemic, 4157 period), with a median age 47 years old, LOS 15 days; 4 occupation 103 Statistical significance was found for every variable between three groups. Post-hoc analysis higher rate males compared period, period others; previous post-pandemic, lower others. proportion primary psychotic disorders significantly other diagnoses group. These younger, longer bed occupation. substance use than any period. Conclusions profile presents as being more male, younger disorders. Further debate is needed towards development community services better adapted new reality.
