Citizen science (CS) has gathered an impressive wealth of open biodiversity data over the last decade, with demonstrated significant scientific contributions in biology and conservation science. However, contribution CS botanical research, more particularly regarding inconspicuous taxonomic groups such as cryptogams remains largely unexplored. Here we assess current status a special focus on non-vascular “cryptogams” (bryophytes, lichens, fungi, algae). We conducted literature review for period 2012 to 2022 synthesize use studies. found increasing trend research (average annual increase ∼40%), although highly biased towards vascular plants (246 papers). Cryptogams remained strongly underrepresented (58 papers), receiving slightly growing attention since 2018. The inconspicuousness nature, high diversity, challenges species identification, low public perception not only restrict made by non-experts but raise concerns about reliability robustness generated data. This is fueled scarcity foundational methodological studies cryptogams, which seems undermine confidence engaging volunteers their or using from platforms tools. Despite this, our showed gradual adoption approaches cryptogam led mycologists. highlight versatility potential advancing knowledge across various subjects at spatial temporal scales otherwise unfathomable researchers, provide insights opportunities application possible solutions discussed limitations. hope work motivates mycologists, phycologists, bryologists, lichenologists further embrace CS, awareness these sensitive ecologically important taxa.

We present the first vascular flora of municipality Pisa. The floristic inventory was built on previous literature and field observations deposited in online database Wikiplantbase #Toscana, integrated by from iNaturalist. established Pisa includes a total 1404 specific subspecific taxa (594 genera, 123 families), out which 112 are alien species. Silene subconica is excluded regional Tuscany, while Solanum nitidibaccatum reported as new casual alien, status Salpichroa origanifolia shifts naturalized to invasive. We present an updated and critically revised list of the vascular flora occurring in Apuan Alps (Tuscany), a renowned area high naturalistic interest. The is based on literature survey, herbarium field studies. host established 1,987 specific subspecific taxa (including 106 naturalized 24 invasive aliens), 76 casual aliens 27 hybrid taxa. Three are new for Tuscany: Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. pulchella, Chaenomeles speciosa (casual alien), Thalictrum minus saxatile, while Helianthemum oelandicum alpestre excluded from regional flora; 47 study (31 native, 16 alien). Concerning old records, 168 (158 four hybrid, six alien taxa) were not confirmed, albeit considered reliable. Moreover, we 10 as locally extinct, 44 doubtfully occurring, 14 reported by error. Life forms suggest transitional situation between Mediterranean bioclimatic context more distinctly subcontinental one. Regarding chorological spectrum, there clear prevalence species with distribution centered Eurosiberian Region, biogeographically relevant component represented 152 taxa, among which 93 Italian endemics (30 them narrowly endemic to Alps). Based species-area relationship, number native exceeds one expected, lower than expected. This positions objectively rich terms its natural value.

Societal Impact Statement Citizen science data are increasingly used in research and conservation, so assessing improving accuracy is important. We recruited 50 experts to review a dataset of Western Australian plant records from iNaturalist. Across three weeks, almost 11,000 received at least one identification. Of the 7,000 initially identified species level, 92% were correctly identified. Building these banks expert‐curated images crucial for biodiverse regions with many endemic threatened species, without comprehensive Flora, as reliably‐identified occurrence that supplement herbarium vouchers help define distributions better inform conservation assessments. ABSTRACT Aim We addressed the role of climate and historical biogeography on temperate‐tropical divide in Mexico, also known as “Mexican Transition Zone” (MTZ). asked: (1) How phylogenetic structure species composition vary across MTZ, (2) What roles dispersal, situ speciation climatic filtering play assembling regional floras, (3) biogeographic events interact to maintain distinct floristic communities transition zone. Abstract Premise Digitized biodiversity data offer extensive information; however, obtaining and processing can be daunting. Complexities arise during cleaning, such as identifying removing problematic records. To address these issues, we created the R package Geographic And Taxonomic Occurrence R‐based Scrubbing (gatoRs). Methods Results The gatoRs workflow includes functions that streamline downloading records from Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Integrated Biocollections (iDigBio). We also to clean downloaded specimen Unlike previous packages, accounts for differences in download structure between GBIF iDigBio allows user control via interactive cleaning steps. Abstract Premise The herbaceous layer accounts for the majority of plant biodiversity in eastern North American forests, encompassing substantial variation life history strategy and function. One group early‐season understory species, colloquially referred to as spring ephemeral wildflowers, are ecologically culturally important, but little is known about prevalence biogeographic patterns strategy. Methods We used observations collected by Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) quantify ephemerality 559 forb species across America classify them according a continuous index (ranging from 0 = never 1 always ephemeral). then this information model where forbs were most common landscape with goal identifying geographic environmental drivers important their distributions ranges. Results Only 3.4% all wildflower ephemerals parts range, 18.4% (103 species) at least part range. Spring peaked absolute richness relative proportion mid latitudes. Conclusions phenology an shade‐avoidance large segment total temperate deciduous forests.
