Introduction. Animal models for SARS-CoV-2 infection, reproducing the clinical features of COVID-19 in humans, are important tools studying pathogenesis disease, transmission pathogen and indispensable testing antiviral drugs vaccines. The aim study was to assess virulence tissue tropism golden Syrian hamsters strains belonging different epidemiologically significant variants: Wuhan-like, Delta, Omicron BA.1.1 BA.5.2. Materials methods. Hamsters were intranasally infected with strains. Virulence assessed by comparing dynamics weight, viral load organs histopathological changes lungs uninfected animals. Results. Wuhan-like Dubrovka strain had greatest hamsters, which manifested development severe pneumonia a delay weight gain 14.6%, high virus content lungs, nasal passages brain — 6.2, 5,9 3.7 lg TCID50/ml homogenate, respectively. Presumably, it infection central nervous system that negatively affected general condition When viruses Delta variants, observed minor loss animals uninformative, so indicators such as lung histopathology, passages, heart other played decisive role assessing pathogenicity. A score assessment histopathology particular value severity pneumonia, since reduced subjectivity evaluating results histological examination provided semi-quantitative pathological process. Conclusion. Despite revealed lower variants compared ancestral Wuhan virus, this animal model retains its conducting preclinical trials drugs.
