Systemic neurophysiological entrainment to behaviorally relevant rhythmic stimuli

Physiological
oscillations,
such
as
those
involved
in
brain
activity,
heartbeat,
and
respiration,
display
inherent
rhythmicity
across
various
timescales.
However,
adaptive
behavior
arises
from
the
interaction
between
these
intrinsic
rhythms
external
environmental
cues.
In
this
study,
we
used
multimodal
neurophysiological
recordings,
simultaneously
capturing
signals
central
autonomic
nervous
systems
(CNS
ANS),
to
explore
dynamics
of
body
response
rhythmic
auditory
stimulation
three
conditions:
baseline
(no
stimulation),
passive
processing,
active
processing
(discrimination
task).
Our
findings
demonstrate
that
engagement
with
synchronizes
both
CNS
ANS
rhythm,
unlike
conditions,
evidenced
by
power
spectral
density
(PSD)
coherence
analyses.
Importantly,
phase
angle
analysis
revealed
a
consistent
alignment
participants
their
physiological
oscillatory
phases
at
stimulus
or
onsets.
This
was
associated
reaction
times,
suggesting
certain
oscillations
are
spontaneously
prioritized
individuals
due
role
sensorimotor
behavior.
These
results
highlight
intricate
interplay
optimizing
responses
demands,
potential
mechanism
embodied
predictive
processing.

The
human
sensorimotor
system
can
naturally
synchronize
with
environmental
rhythms,
such
as
light
pulses
or
sound
beats.
Several
studies
showed
that
different
styles
and
tempos
of
music,
other
rhythmic
stimuli,
have
an
impact
on
physiological
including
electrocortical
brain
activity,
heart
rate,
motor
coordination.
Such
synchronization,
also
known
the
"entrainment
effect",
has
been
identified
a
crucial
mechanism
impacting
cognitive,
motor,
affective
functioning.
This
review
examines
theoretical
empirical
contributions
to
literature
entrainment,
particular
focus
mechanisms
underlying
this
phenomenon
its
role
in
functions.
We
address
inconsistent
terminology
used
evaluate
range
measurement
approaches
assess
entrainment
phenomena.
Finally,
we
propose
definition
"physiological
entrainment"
emphasizes
fundamental
encompasses
interactions
between
body
environment,
support
information
processing
across
bodily
systems
sustain
adaptive
responses.
