The human sensorimotor system can naturally synchronize with environmental rhythms, such as light pulses or sound beats. Several studies showed that different styles and tempos of music, other rhythmic stimuli, have an impact on physiological including electrocortical brain activity, heart rate, motor coordination. Such synchronization, also known the "entrainment effect", has been identified a crucial mechanism impacting cognitive, motor, affective functioning. This review examines theoretical empirical contributions to literature entrainment, particular focus mechanisms underlying this phenomenon its role in functions. We address inconsistent terminology used evaluate range measurement approaches assess entrainment phenomena. Finally, we propose definition "physiological entrainment" emphasizes fundamental encompasses interactions between body environment, support information processing across bodily systems sustain adaptive responses. reviewed recent through lens "embodied cognition" framework, offering unified perspective entrainment. Evidence from current suggests produces measurable effects, especially neural oscillations, rate variability, synchronization. Eventually, changes cognitive processing, functioning, Physiological emerges mind-body connection. Entrainment-based interventions may be promote well-being by enhancing functions, suggesting potential rehabilitative mental health.

Physiological oscillations, such as those involved in brain activity, heartbeat, and respiration, display inherent rhythmicity across various timescales. However, adaptive behavior arises from the interaction between these intrinsic rhythms external environmental cues. In this study, we used multimodal neurophysiological recordings, simultaneously capturing signals central autonomic nervous systems (CNS ANS), to explore dynamics of body response rhythmic auditory stimulation three conditions: baseline (no stimulation), passive processing, active processing (discrimination task). Our findings demonstrate that engagement with synchronizes both CNS ANS rhythm, unlike conditions, evidenced by power spectral density (PSD) coherence analyses. Importantly, phase angle analysis revealed a consistent alignment participants their physiological oscillatory phases at stimulus or onsets. This was associated reaction times, suggesting certain oscillations are spontaneously prioritized individuals due role sensorimotor behavior. These results highlight intricate interplay optimizing responses demands, potential mechanism embodied predictive processing.
