The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how people relate to and use outdoor spaces, particularly in densely populated areas. We investigate the transformations that took place during 2020 lockdown first post-lockdown summer, with an emphasis on changes sound environment, context of a mixed-use central neighbourhood Montreal (Plateau-Mont-Royal), Canada. Semi-structured interviews thirteen residents, conducted autumn 2020, showed restrictions indoor including ban gatherings, coupled transformation home environments into work, study, relaxation spaces drove residents engage more public their neighbourhoods. This resulted extended uses terms area, activities, duration stay even time use, new for activities once restricted (e.g. family meals, celebrations). Sound played critical role these space transformations, as diversity brought back sounds human activity encouraged sense 'normality': safe shared form coming together had been lost following lockdown. study highlighted diverse, roles (outdoor) can play everyday urban life, beyond just providing access quiet sonic consequences this reinforcing previously paused forms life. Furthermore, intentional like pedestrianizations, offer flexible amenities, impromptu musical performances organized socializing ful filled satisfied by third places effectively became temporary 'fourth places'. These findings provide grounds reimagining future – not only practice but also social imaginary, especially relation interventions programming, well promoting positive outcomes spaces.

Method Relevant articles published, from 2019 February 17, 2023, were searched using Scopus Web Science databases. Eligible studies published English all passed a quality evaluation. Result In final search, 40 selected analyzed. majority conducted during pandemic categorized impact on into three main categories: Place-based attribute, Process, Function. Conclusion findings demonstrated people private (gardens, balconies, etc.), small local public spaces, sitting gathering neighborhood, nearby open urban green-blue throughout era. They visited outside city areas, gardens, agricultural forestlands, pastures. research, we investigated characteristics these classified them four landscape, land use, activity, movement, accessibility. results showed exposure nature or space improved increased attention decision-making people. We have proposed design implications recommendations for crises improve safety, security, capital increasing safe access diverse high-quality different scales, which will ultimately enhance age groups.

The period of home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic made importance a high-quality surrounding environment even more evident than before. Several studies have been carried out to assess (negative) impacts noise on annoyance, particularly whilst working from (WFH). present study takes step further by (1) investigating positive and negative "actual" acoustic range activities, i.e., WFH, relaxation, physical, sexual (2) identifying characteristics an "ideal" indoor soundscape. is based qualitative analysis verbal descriptions collected open-ended questions included in survey administered January 2021 464 respondents living London, lockdown. actual scenario varied no effect task execution, disruption, distraction, concern disturbing others or being heard. Positive support concentration, motivation, freedom sound expression, feeling connected surroundings comforted presence others, according mechanisms described study. Negative appraisal could trigger coping strategies (e.g., controlling windows, playing music, wearing headphones) behavioural changes lowering volume voice muting oneself call, changing workout type) that turn limit enhance behaviour, affect foster wellbeing. were most frequently reported WFH (by 55% participants), followed relaxation activities (40.6%), (30.1%), (20.1%). ideal soundscape was as quiet, well-sound insulated environment, which guarantees access sounds (i.e., natural sounds, urban background), thus resulting privacy, intimacy, place where express themselves without noise-related constraints. complements literature findings housing design directions light pandemic, providing evidence poor insulation at home, potential benefits nature-based solutions for soundscapes, opportunities activity-based domestic environments, inclusive broader set uses household compositions.

The importance of natural environments in supporting health and wellbeing has been well evidenced positive mental physical outcomes, including during periods crisis stress. Given the disproportionate impacts COVID-19 pandemic have greatest for those who are most vulnerable, understanding role environment alternative forms nature engagement vulnerable groups is important. This study explored how supported with a pre-existing condition first UK lockdown. Semi-structured interviews were conducted 17 adults analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four themes identified: versus nature; Nature as an extension replacement; connectedness; Therapeutic nature. findings show through private public environments, micro-restorative opportunities, connection important pathway, therapeutic benefits engagement. present research extends evidence-base beyond patterns to deeper existing conditions perceived interacted relation their Findings discussed policy implications.

Chronic noise exposure in daily life not only causes physical and mental illness but also reduces quality of life. However, collecting objective data on sound subjective acoustic comfort through a traditional one-shot survey is difficult. This study applied online chatbots social media to explore the effects exposure, personal characteristics, sensitivity, burnout status, sleep using short-term participatory cohort design. During two-month 2022, 207 participants completed at least 15 days collection perception, as well periodic structural questionnaires during follow-ups. Noise from neighbours has been shown to be one of the most noise annoying sources in Germany, but research on influencing factors for annoyance ratings is scarce. Therefore, we investigated whether different personal and contextual (social, physical) contribute neighbour better understand situation. A population-representative survey four areas Germany was conducted, with each area further stratified according their density agglomeration (inner city, urban outskirt, rural area). Randomly selected residents were invited by mail participate study, either online or via a paper–pencil mode. assessed (e.g., neighbourhood, road, railway, aircrafts, types industry). In total, 1973 questionnaires completed. We identified several predictive annoyance: satisfaction relationship neighbours, residential satisfaction, sensitivity, people living inner city comparison areas. Particularly, social aspects such as neighbourhood have affect annoyance.
