Abstract Growing up in a high poverty neighborhood is associated with elevated risk for academic challenges and health problems. Here, we take data-driven approach to exploring how measures of children’s environments relate the development their brain structure function community sample children between ages 4 10 years. We constructed exposomes including family socioeconomic status, exposure adversity, geocoded crime, environmental toxins. connected exposome two structural (cortical thickness surface area, n = 170) functional (participation coefficient clustering coefficient, 130). found dense connections within layers sparse layers. Lower income was thinner visual cortex, consistent theory that accelerated detectable early-developing regions. Greater incidence blood lead levels greater segregation default mode network, evidence toxins are deposited into along midline. Our study demonstrates utility multilayer network analysis bridge neural explanatory better understand complexity child development.

Functional brain networks emerge prenatally, grow interactively during the first years of life, and optimize both within-network topology between-network interactions as individuals age. This review summarizes research that has characterized this process over past two decades, aims to link functional network growth with emerging behaviors, thereby developing a more holistic understanding behavior from perspective. synthesis suggests development brain's follows an overlapping hierarchy, progressing primary sensory/motor socioemotional-centered finally higher-order cognitive/executive control networks. Risk-related alterations, resilience factors, treatment effects, novel therapeutic opportunities are also discussed encourage consideration future imaging-assisted methods for identifying risks interventions.

How brain structure relates to function is a critical and open question in neuroscience. Here, we characterize regional variation structure–function coupling, capturing the degree which cortical region’s structural connections relate patterns of coordinated neural activity healthy, term-born neonates ( n = 239). Regional coupling heterogeneously patterned across cortex, with higher auditory, lateral prefrontal, inferior parietal cortices. Average negatively associated age during first month life, age-associated decreases seen primary sensory systems, specifically auditory somatomotor regions. Age-associated “decoupling” reflects increasingly segregated functional connectivity integrated white matter age. Notably, after accounting for dorsal attention, cingulo-opercular, visual systems at birth faster visuospatial attention faces one year These results yield valuable insight into development including how interregional life might shape later attention.

Environmental influences on brain structure and function during early development have been well-characterized. In pre-registered analyses, we test the theory that socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with differences in trajectories of intrinsic network from birth to three years (n = 261). Prenatal SES developmental increases cortical segregation, neonates toddlers lower-SES backgrounds showing a steeper increase segregation age, consistent accelerated development. Associations between occur at local scale conform sensorimotor-association hierarchy organization. SES-associated are language abilities two years, such lower improved abilities. These results yield key insight into timing directionality associations environment

Abstract While cortical patterning has been a perennial research topic in neuroscience, the mechanism for its consequence, namely functional specialization at macro scale, remains an open question human brain. Here, we focused on age-dependent changes of resting-state thalamocortical connectivity to investigate role emergence large-scale networks across infancy, childhood and young adulthood. We found that during infancy reflects early differentiation sensorimotor genetically-influenced axonal projection. This initial thalamus, however, seems change childhood, by establishing with salience network decoupling externally- internally-oriented processes. Developmental simulation perturbation analyses corroborated these findings, demonstrating highest contribution thalamic connectivity, especially later age youth, formation key characteristics mature brain, such as gradient hierarchy. Our study highlights developmentally shifting thalamus orchestrating complex brain organization potential implications developmental conditions characterized compromised internal external processing.

Introduction Reduced sleep health has been consistently linked with increased negative emotion in children. While characteristics have associated neural function adults and adolescents, much less is known about these associations children while considering socioeconomic context. In this study, we examined the among factors, duration timing, resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of amygdala Methods Participants were typically-developing 5- to 9-year-olds from socioeconomically diverse families (61% female; N = 94). Parents reported on children’s weekday weekend bedtimes wake-up times, which used compute midpoint. Analyses focused amygdala-anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) followed by amygdala-whole brain connectivity. Results Lower family income-to-needs ratio parental education significantly later timing shorter duration. Shorter was decreased amygdala-ACC amygdala-insula Later midpoint amygdala-paracingulate amygdala-postcentral gyrus Socioeconomic factors indirectly circuits via timing. Discussion These results suggest that disadvantage may interfere both turn possibly altering processing regulation Effective strategies supporting economic conditions benefits for development

Many psychiatric conditions have their roots in early development. Individual differences prenatal brain function (which is influenced by a combination of genetic risk and the environment) likely interact with individual postnatal experience, resulting substantial variation functional organization development infancy. Neuroimaging has been powerful tool for understanding typical atypical holds promise uncovering neurodevelopmental basis illness; however, its clinical utility relatively limited thus far. A challenge this endeavor traditional approach averaging data across groups despite individuals varying organization, which obscures important clinically relevant variation. Precision mapping (PFM) neuroimaging technique that allows capture individual-specific highly reliable properties. Here, we discuss how PFM, through focus on individuals, provided novel insights life span elucidating neural disorders. We first summarize extant literature PFM normative populations, followed utilization studying adults. conclude discussing potential infant advancing developmental precision psychiatry applications, given many disorders start during infancy are associated changes neuroanatomy. Myelination is a key developmental process that promotes rapid and efficient information transfer. Myelin also stabilizes existing brain networks thus may constrain neuroplasticity, defined here as the brain's potential to change in response experiences rather than canonical definition of change. Characterizing individual differences neuroplasticity shed light on mechanisms by which early shape learning, body development, interventions. The T1-weighted/T2-weighted (T1w/T2w) MRI signal ratio proxy measure cortical microstructure neuroplasticity. Here, pre-registered analyses, we investigated T1w/T2w ratios children (ages 4-10, n = 157). were positively associated with age within early-developing sensorimotor attention regions. We tested whether socioeconomic status, cognition (crystallized knowledge or fluid reasoning), biological (as measured molar eruption) related but found no significant effects. Associations among ratios, experiences, emerge later adolescence not be strong enough detect moderate sample sizes.
