Abstract When holding visual information temporarily in working memory (WM), the neural representation of memorandum is distributed across various cortical regions, including and frontal cortices. However, role stimulus cortices during WM has been controversial. Here we tested hypothesis that persists cortex to facilitate flexible control demands WM. During functional MRI, participants flexibly switched between simple maintenance or more complex rule-based categorization maintained on a trial-by-trial basis. Our results demonstrated enhanced tracked for active precise maintenance. This differential traded off with newly-generated category varying demands. Simulation using multi-module recurrent networks replicated human patterns when was preserved network readout. Altogether, these findings help reconcile long-standing debate research, provide empirical computational evidence serves as potential coding scheme accommodate ever-changing environment.

Animals guide their behaviors through internal representations of the world in brain. We aimed to understand how macaque brain stores such general knowledge, focusing on object color knowledge. Three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments were conducted monkeys: viewing chromatic and achromatic gratings, grayscale images familiar fruits vegetables (e.g., strawberry), true- false-colored objects red strawberry green strawberry). observed robust knowledge patches, especially one located around TEO: activity patterns could classify pictures based memory response these regions translate between grating grating—grayscale that classifiers trained by gratings successfully according colors. Our results showed direct positive evidence monkeys. These indicate perceptually grounded representation as a conservative mechanism open new avenue study this particular (semantic) with models.

Flexible pulse-by-pulse regulation of sensorimotor synchronization is crucial for voluntarily showing rhythmic behaviors synchronously with external cueing; however, the underpinning neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays a key role by coordinating both proactive and reactive motor outcomes based on contextual mental imagery. To test our hypothesis, missing-oddball task in finger-tapping paradigms was conducted 33 healthy young volunteers. The dynamic properties dACC were evaluated event-related deep-brain activity (ER-DBA), supported potential (ERP) analysis behavioral evaluation signal detection theory. found ER-DBA activation/deactivation reflected strategic choice control modality accordance Reverse ERP traces, as omission responses, confirmed imagery contextual. updated only environmental changes via perceptual evidence response-based abductive reasoning. Moreover, stable on-pulse tapping achievable maintaining while creating an syncopated rhythms from simple beat trains, whereas accuracy degraded frequent erroneous missing pulses. conclude regulates utilizing experience novel rhythms.
