Variation in natural behavior is tightly linked to the ecological resources with which they co-evolved. This review discusses poison frog and neuroendocrinology illustrate how factors drive diversification of its underlying neural mechanisms. Poison frogs show tremendous diversity reproductive strategies that are water their environment. Different species utilize particular pool sizes rear offspring, has selected for sex differences parental among species. Tadpole reflects behavioral adults, where tadpoles can display social group living or violent aggression begging behavior, all associated size occupancy. Using this species, we have identified core brain regions, like hippocampus preoptic area, as being involved regulating different aspects amphibian behavior. In contrast neuromodulators governing these behaviors seem be more labile across work exemplifies comparative studies a prime experimental system study evolution tunes circuits give rise observe world. Finally, ends on important form - our scientific community outreach, decolonization field based science, inclusion groups historically excluded from conducting research needed enterprise transform into something truly beneficial members society.

Abstract For many animal species, vocal communication is a critical social behavior and often necessary component of reproductive success. Additionally, vocalizations are demanding motor acts. Wanting to know whether specific molecular toolkit might be required for vocalization, we used RNA‐sequencing investigate neural gene expression underlying the performance an extreme behavior, courtship hum plainfin midshipman fish ( Porichthys notatus ). Single hums can last up 2 h may repeated throughout evening activity. We asked behavioral states associated with signatures in key brain regions that regulate vocalization by comparing transcript levels humming versus non‐humming males. find circadian‐related genes period3 Clock significantly upregulated nucleus preoptic area‐anterior hypothalamus, respectively, compared males, indicating internal circadian clocks differ between these divergent states. In addition, identify suites differentially expressed related synaptic transmission, ion channels transport, neuropeptide hormone signaling, metabolism antioxidant activity together support energetic demands behavior. Comparisons across stress regional differences expression, while also showing coordinated regulation circuit preparation These results underscore role differential shifts states, this case neuroendocrine, control vocalization.
