Forty years since the initial discovery of neurogenesis in postnatal rat hippocampus, investigators have now firmly established that active from neural progenitors continues throughout life discrete regions central nervous systems (CNS) all mammals, including humans. Significant progress has been made over past few understanding developmental process and regulation adult neurogenesis, proliferation, fate specification, neuronal maturation, targeting, synaptic integration newborn neurons. The function this evolutionarily conserved phenomenon, however, remains elusive mammals. Adult represents a striking example structural plasticity mature CNS environment. Advances our will not only shed light on basic principles plasticity, but also may lead to strategies for cell replacement therapy after injury or degenerative neurological diseases.

Association of olfactory dysfunction with risk for future Parkinson's disease DOI

Although olfactory dysfunction is commonly associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), it not known whether such can predate the onset of clinical PD in a community-based population. This study examines association future development Honolulu-Asia Aging Study cohort membersOlfaction was assessed from 1991 to 1996 2,267 men aged 71 95 years who were free and dementia at time olfaction testing. Participants followed for up 8 incident RESULTS: In course follow-up, 35 diagnosed (24.6/10,000 person-years). The average age diagnosis 82.9 +/- 3.8 (range, 76-93) years, 4.0 1.9 1-8) years. Adult-born dentate granule cells (DGCs) contribute to learning and memory, yet it remains unknown when adult-born DGCs become involved in the cognitive processes. During neurogenesis, immature display distinctive physiological characteristics while undergoing morphological maturation before final integration into neural circuits.
