Abstract Sperm cells of all taxa share a common goal to reach and fertilize an ovum, yet sperm are one the most diverse cell types in nature. While structural diversity these is well recognized, functional significance variation design remains elusive. An important function spermatozoa need migrate toward ova, often over long distances foreign environment, which may include complex hostile female reproductive tract. Several comparative experimental studies have attempted address link between morphology motility, conclusions drawn from inconsistent, even within same taxa. ATP supply is essential for sperm performance and increases in content coevolve with enhanced swimming velocity as a response to competition rodents. the balance between production consumption but, although has received much attention, little known about consumption. The rate of crucial propagation flagellar wave, becoming main determinant time distance could move before exhausting their reserves. A high yield per unit consumed (efficiency) provide advantages competition. We characterized group mouse species different levels understand its impact on velocity, duration, Interspecific comparisons revealed that higher had rates faster velocity. Moreover, at swam more efficiently, since they were able cover consumed. Our results suggest by coupling turnover increased efficiency expenditure, would respond increasingly competitive environments while maintaining positive balance.

Competition between spermatozoa of rival males to gain fertilizations has led a wide array modifications in sperm structure and function. Sperm cells most muroid rodents have hook-shaped extensions the apical-ventral tip head, but function this is largely unknown. These 'hooks' may facilitate aggregation so-called 'trains', as an adaptation competition, because trains swim faster than free-swimming cells. However, there controversy regarding role hook train formation, relation whether it selected by competition. We examined from with varying levels competition assess (i) aggregates are common these taxa, (ii) presence relates formation aggregations, (iii) aggregations explained Our analyses 25 species revealed that > 92% individually all species, exception wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, which ~50% swimming freely. Species hooked had higher longer whose lack hook. Neither nor were related percentage aggregations. Thus, exceptional trait found only few evolution associated levels, unlikely be aggregates. The evolutionary significance head thus remains elusive, future studies should examine potential roles pervasive sperm's hydrodynamic efficiency sperm-female tract interactions.

Female multiple mating provides the opportunity for sexual selection to continue after gamete release, generating strong on male reproductive traits. In particular, in species where female is common, males are expected invest more testicular tissue afford them a numerical advantage during sperm competition. However, although relative testes size (correcting body size) commonly used proxy of strength competition, there surprisingly scant direct evidence linking investment with genetic estimates paternity across species. Here, we test hypothesis that associated competition risk (multiple percentage) and intensity (number sires per brood) fishes, most diverse specious vertebrate group. We provide conclusive larger experiencing higher finding remains consistent among sharks bony fishes (including separate analyses focused only cichlids). These findings shed new light evolutionary processes governing basal lineage validate now-widespread use mass as fishes.
