In recent years, significant progress has been achieved in genome editing applications using new programmable DNA nucleases such as zinc finger (ZFNs), transcription activator-like endonucleases (TALENs) and the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/Cas9 system (CRISPR/Cas9).
