Difficulties Faced by Undergraduate Students in English Public Speaking at a Malaysian University

The
ability

speak
English

university

employment
purposes
after
graduation.
Nowadays,
employers
seek
staff
who
can

This
study,
therefore,
aims
explore
difficulties
factors
that
hinder
effective
speaking
among
undergraduate
students
at
a
Malaysian
university.

qualitative
method
through
face-to-face
semi-structured
interviews
gathered
data
from
purposive
sample
of
44
students.

analyzed
using
an
inductive-thematic
analysis:
identifying
natural
units
meaning,
labeling,
categorizing,
organizing
them,
constructing
narratives,
interpreting
the
findings.
findings
showed
face
various
concerning
due
poor
language
skills
terms
grammar,
vocabulary,
pronunciation,
fluency.
Additionally,
revealed
several
students,
including
dislike
English,
nervousness,
low
self-esteem,
lack
confidence,
shyness,
eye
contact,
gender
differences
as
well
idea,
practice,
audience
attention.
These
may
result
having
high
level
anxiety
during
speaking.
