The Role of Interpersonal Relationships in Adolescents' Suicidal Behavior: A Qualitative Analysis of Semi-Structured Interviews

<p>This
article
presents
the
results
of
a
qualitative
analysis
based
on
semi-structured
interviews
conducted
with
adolescents
(n=13,
aged
13–17),
who
were
admitted
to
an
inpatient
psychiatric
facility
after
attempted
suicide.
Content
yielded
groups
words
describing
circumstances
suicide
attempt
semantic
proximity.
The
following
emerged
(ordered
by
descending
frequency
use):
one's
psychological
state,
descriptions
family
and
relatives,
related
studies,
school
or
college,
relationships
peers.
Within
framework
thematic
analysis,
two
superordinate
themes
nine
subthemes
identified,
revealing
subjective
experience
attempt.

theme,
<em>psychological
distress</em>,

“negative
thoughts
emotions”,
“mental
pain”
“fear
surviving”.

<em>interpersonal
vulnerability</em>,
“feeling
misunderstood
loved
ones”,

These
findings
suggest
that
interpersonal
may
play
significant
role
in
adolescents’
attempts,
including
both
(primarily
mothers)
peers;
moreover,
state
distress
is
described
direct
connection
dissatisfaction
(conflicts,
rejection,
neglect).
Thus,
vulnerability,

distress,
one
key
characteristics
