Urbanization occurs now more rapidly than before, due to the development of compact cities or urban sprawl, threatening quasi-natural areas, especially those protected within/near built-up ones. Europe lacks laws dedicated natural areas within which are subject same provisions as ones, a legislative vacuum. This research aimed find best planning approach for resiliently conserving and developing these establishing grounds new tool used proximity cities. City densification and greening are two priority urban-policy objectives, for the coming years, aimed at making cities more resilient to climate change, slowing spread of urbanization improving quality life in cities. These sometimes contradictory objectives that require fine deep analysis create approaches methods combine them. The most recent research has presented so-called small urban green spaces (SUGSs) as a viable alternative achieve this double objective. This was starting point research, which used GIS digital microscale fieldwork study possibilities an excessively dense low-quality space city Pamplona (Spain). results thereof showed structure neighbourhood contains large number with no specific use or function—residual, surface vertical spaces—and simply undefined remnants between buildings streets, party walls were never built. Only these occupy total area is twice size existing spaces. Based on results, work explores possibility increasing areas through new SUGSs creation corridor increases environmental social connectivity studied space.

The importance of small urban green areas has increased in the context rapid urbanization and densification tissue. analysis these through remote sensing been limited due to low spatial resolution freely available satellite images. We propose a timeseries on 3 m Planet images, using GEOBIA vegetation indices, with aim extracting assessing quality two different climatic biogeographical regions – temperate (Bucharest, Romania) mediterranean (Athens, Greece). Our results have shown high accuracy (over 91%) regarding extraction both cities, across all analysed showed consistency location for around 55% identified surfaces throughout entire period. indices registered higher values region, characteristics planning cities. For same reasons, increase density quality, as result distance from city centre decrease built-up is more obvious Athens. proposed method provides valuable insights distribution at level can represent ground basis many analyses, currently by poor resolution.
