Fishery nutrient profiles provide a practical tool for nutrition-sensitive fisheries management

Abstract
Small-scale
fisheries
are
a
crucial
source
of
nutrient-dense
aquatic
foods
in
low-
and
middle-income
countries
(LMICs),
yet
practical
tools
to
manage
these
optimize
nutritional
outcomes
an
ecosystem
approach
remain
limited.
We
present
analytical
framework
predictive
model
fishery
nutrient
profiles
under
typical
multispecies,
multi-gear
situations.
Using
six-years
catch
data
from
Timor-Leste,
we
modelled
how
different
fishing
methods,
habitats,
vessel
types
seasons
influence
the
yield
nutrients
public
health
significance.
Our
results
demonstrate
that
method
habitat
strong
predictors
profiles.
Importantly,
combinations
strategies
can
achieve
similar
outcomes,
indicating
complementary
management
pathways
enhance
availability
for
communities
while
balancing
ecological,
economic,
human
wellbeing
goals.
This
replicable
provides
actionable
insights
nutrition-sensitive
offers
data-driven
guidance
policies
aimed
at
improving
food
nutrition
security
LMICs.

Abstract
The
role
that
fish
play
in
healthy,
sustainable
diets
is
well
documented,
but
getting
into
rural
presents
supply
and
demand
challenges.
Nearshore
fish-aggregating
devices
(FADs)
are
simple,
climate
smart
placed
coastal
fishing
grounds
away
from
reefs
to
concentrate
pelagic
make
them
easier
for
fishers
catch.
We
conducted
a
cluster-randomized,
controlled
trial
Timor-Leste
test
the
effects
of
nearshore
FADs
on
catch
rates
evaluate
FAD
placement
alone,
social
behaviour
change
(SBC)
component
combined
SBC
household
weekly
purchase
women’s
children’s
consumption
day
prior.
Catch
data
was
collected
daily
landing
sites,
using
digital
fisheries
monitoring
system.
Household
purchases
were
measured
by
asking
detailed
questions
about
previous
seven
days,
qualitative
24-hour
recalls
with
woman
reproductive
age
house.
Analysis
intention-to-treat.
per
unit
effort
(CPUE)
significantly
increased
at
one
ground
FADs
(0.85
kg/fisher/hr)
decreased
two
grounds,
–0.43
kg
–0.50
kg.
Households
FADs+SBC
arm
almost
twice
as
likely
during
week
compared
control
households
(PR;
1.90,
95%
CI;
1.14,
3.20,
p<0.05).
Women
FAD+SBC
4
times
report
consuming
prior
women
(PR:
4.17,
CI
1.88,
9.29;
p<0.001).
There
no
differences
or
either
alone
arms.
