Taking advantage fact that São Paulo State featured in-person classes for most first school quarter 2020 but not thereafter, we estimate effects secondary education using a differences-in-differences strategy contrasts variation students’ outcomes across different quarters, before and during pandemic. We also intention-to-treat reopening schools pandemic through triple-differences strategy, contrasting changes educational municipalities grades resumed or over last 2020. find that, under learning, dropout risk increased by 365% while test scores decreased 0.32 s.d., as if students had only learned 27.5% equivalent. Partially resuming 20% relative control group.

Education systems regularly face unexpected school closures, whether due to disease outbreaks, natural disasters, or other adverse shocks. In low-income countries where internet access is scarce, distance learning - the most common educational solution often passive, via TV radio, with little opportunity for teacher-student interaction. this paper we evaluate effectiveness of live tutoring calls from teachers, designed supplement radio instruction during 2020 closures prompted by COVID-19 pandemic. We do a randomised controlled trial 4,399 primary students in Sierra Leone. Tutoring led some limited increase activity, but had no effect on mathematics language test scores, girls boys, and provided public private teachers. Even having received calls, one three children reported not listening at all, so take-up may partly explain our results.
