Abstract Enhancing ESG performance has emerged as a crucial strategy for companies to bolster market value and competitiveness. However, this trend sparked concerns about corporate greenwashing, where may selectively disclose ESG-related information garner short-term benefits. Against backdrop, using Chinese A-share listed from 2010 2022, we examine the impact of investor attention on greenwashing. The findings reveal that significantly curbs Mechanism analysis indicates achieves by alleviating financing constraints enhancing transparency in information. Furthermore, moderating suggests internal controls increasing environmental subsidies can strengthen inhibitory effect Finally, heterogeneity demonstrates greenwashing is more pronounced state-owned enterprises facing high constraints.
