Dog caregiver reporting on the spectrum of fearful–aggressive behaviours often describes ‘unpredictable’ or ‘exaggerated’ responses to a situation/animal/person. A possible explanation for these behavioural considers that dog is reacting triggered memories which has negative association. For many dogs undergoing veterinary treatment rehabilitation through canine rescue organisation, assessing clinician relies “proxy” history/background by (dog owner, foster carer, shelter personnel). Detailed information event circumstances resulting in this association may be limited absent altogether. Consideration trauma-informed care (TIC) approach, currently applied wide range human psychology and social fields, helpful guiding clinical approach taken. The literature relating adverse early experience (AEE) puppies/dogs compared children/adults was evaluated identify common themes conclusions identified across both species. In absence known/identifiable trauma, assessment management should consider ‘problem’ behave as it does, result previous trauma. can then viewed lens empathy understanding, lacking presenting with impulsive, reactive, aggressive behaviours. Assessment must avoid re-traumatising animal exposure triggering stimuli and, options include counselling caregivers impact experiences, consideration window tolerance, TIC modification techniques.

Abstract The adjustment period — wherein adopted animals transition to their new home is a critical time for animal welfare and owner satisfaction, yet literature varies in estimates of how long this lasts dogs. This study sought better characterise the relation experience canine clarify its duration as perceived by owners. We used qualitative approach examine perceptions period. Twenty-seven interviews were conducted analysed using thematic content analysis. Six themes described: duration; behavioural indicators during adjustment; behaviours indicative factors influencing change routine; concerns. Over half participants last longer than four months. Behaviours owners assess dog included: moderation extremes (e.g. lethargy restlessness); play; tail wagging; greeting; learning routine. Owners reported that prior experiences medical needs impacted duration, they adjusted aspects lifestyle, raised concerns about being right fit dog. Future research should incorporate time-frame understand when dogs adjust home, there variation behaviour adjustment, it must also account individual differences. As we develop understanding period, adopters can be prepared initial months ownership, interventions individualised improve welfare.

Although dogs' life expectancies are six to twelve times shorter than that of humans, the demographics (e.g. living conditions) dogs can still change considerably with aging, similarly humans. Despite fact dog is a particularly good model for human healthspan, and number aged in population growing parallel there has been few previous attempts describe demographic changes statistically. We utilized an on-line questionnaire examine link between age health dog, owner cross-sectional Hungarian sample. Results from univariate analyses revealed 20 27 variables measured differed significantly groups. Our results pure breed suffered problems at younger age, may die earlier mixed breeds. The oldest group (>12 years) consisted fewer breeds sample was on average older Old were classified more frequently as unhealthy, less often had "normal" body condition score, received medication supplements. They also male, neutered, (such sensory, joint and/or tooth problems), activity/interaction/training owner, likely have experienced one or traumatic events. Surprisingly, youngest contained breeds, fed raw meat, owners under 29 years, reflecting new trends among owners. high prevalence events their lifetime (over 40% sample), indicates welfare could be improved by informing greatest risk factors trauma, providing interventions reduce impact. Experiencing multiple such spending time shelter, changing owners, injury/prolonged disease/surgery, getting lost, family structure increased likelihood reported currently show behavioral signs they attribute trauma.

It is widely recognised that for vertebrate species, personalities vary along an axis with extremes represented by 'proactive' and 'reactive' individuals. The aim of this study was to verify whether there a relationship between personality disease vulnerability in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) exposed intensely stressful situation such as entering shelter. Twenty-eight shelter participated the study. ethogram consisted approximately 100 behavioural patterns. Behavioural observations their new environment, Novel Object T-maze test were used evaluate captured strays A blood sample from each dog obtained at admission into after month immunological state. Based on PCA analyses observational combined experimental data, ordered boldness-shyness axis, first being boldest. Excluding one (the 6th), 10 showed improved health status: absence symptoms during 30 days monitoring parameters; opposite found shy dogs. results research seem confirm findings other i.e., bold diseases might be different, especially when they must cope highly infectious environment

The concept of psychological resilience is well-explored in the human literature and often described as ability to 'bounce back' following adversity. However, it remains a neglected research area dogs despite observations that like humans, vary their cope with stress. This study aimed develop first canine 'resilience' scale. An on-line survey was developed for owners. covered demographics, medical/behavioural history dog, 19 potential items assessed using 5-point Likert scale; 1084 complete responses were received during period, 329 respondents subsequently completing questionnaire second time, 6-8 weeks later. Intra-rater reliability assessed, only reliable retained. A principal component analysis (PCA) varimax rotation then performed components extracted on basis inspection scree plots Kaiser criterion. Items retained if they loaded >0.4 onto one but removed cross-loaded more than component. resulted 14-item, 2-component solution. One appeared describe "Adaptability/behavioural flexibility" other "Perseverance", which are resilience. Predictive validity established expected correlates, such problem behaviour. resulting instrument called Lincoln Canine Adaptability Resilience Scale (L-CARS) be assessment dogs.
