Abstract The potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N 2 O) originates primarily from natural and engineered microbiomes. Emission seasonality is widely reported while the underlying metabolic controls remain largely unresolved, hindering effective mitigation. We use biological wastewater treatment as tractable model ecosystem over nearly two years. Long-term metagenomic-resolved metaproteomics combined with ex situ kinetic full-scale operational characterization. By leveraging evidence independently obtained at multiple ecophysiological levels, individual genetic potential to actual metabolism emergent community phenotype, cascade of environmental triggers driving N O emissions resolved. explain dynamics in nitrite accumulation unbalance between ammonia oxidisers, identify nitrifier denitrification prime O-producing pathway. dissolved emerged key actionable parameter for emission control. This work exemplifies yet-to-be-realized multi-meta-omics approaches mechanistic understanding ecological engineering microbiomes, ultimately advancing sustainable biotechnological developments.

Abstract The European Union (EU)’s legislation on urban wastewater requires all agglomerations with a population equivalent (PE) above 2000 people to undergo secondary (mechanical/physical and biological) treatment. Agglomerations below PE, though, fall outside the scope of current EU’s legislation. As such, their regulation is heterogeneous across various EU member states, there no systematic collection nor reporting data enabling an estimation actual significance as source pollution for receiving water bodies. Here we present spatial model delineate in GIS, based distribution land cover. From results, EU, identify 364,650 PE or less, housing cumulative about 75 million inhabitants. We then calculate organic matter nutrient loads these can discharge, assuming they presently primary treatment, reduction that be expected under different treatment scenarios, together corresponding costs simple cost model. Using conventional shadow price nutrients removed, show scenarios benefit-to-cost ratio (B/C) (or close to) 1. However, only scenario applied 1000 provides sufficient safety margins B/C. This suggests opportunity expand down this size, while addressing smaller depending impacts bodies, through “appropriate treatments” defined by local authorities.
