ABSTRACT Despite water being a significant output of and resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), tertiary wastewater treatment processes are often underrepresented in integrated WRRF models. This study critically reviews the approaches used comprehensive models for ozone (O3) biological activated carbon (BAC) operation units systems. The current characterised by limitations mechanisms that describe O3 disinfection by-product formation, BAC adsorption multi-component solutes. Drawing from insights O3, BAC, modelling approaches, we propose an O3–BAC model suitable simulating dissolved organic (DOC) micropollutants removal We recommend hybrid approach which data-driven can be to compensate structural mechanistic is developed within sludge (ASM) framework flexibility coupling with other hence facilitates developing system-wide reclamation reuse
