Background Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is an emerging behavioral addiction with mental health implications among adolescents. Low self-control established risk factor of IGD. Few studies have, however, examined the moderating role meaning in life (MIL) on relationships between low and IGD symptoms functioning. Objective This study aimed to examine effects MIL their interaction family school functioning a structural equation model. Methods A sample 2064 adolescents (967, 46.9% male; mean age 14.6 years) was recruited by multistage cluster random sampling from 5 middle schools Sichuan, China, 2022. The participants completed self-report questionnaire validated measures self-control, presence MIL, search for symptoms, commitment, Construct validity, measurement invariance, invariance were evaluated confirmatory analysis across sex. Structural modeling conducted indirect through symptoms. Latent moderated performed Results All scales showed satisfactory model fit scalar Males significantly greater lower levels (Cohen d=0.25-1.20, P<.001) than females. positively associated impulsivity (β=.20, P=.01), temper (β=.25, P<.001), (β=.11, P=.048) negatively (β=–.21, P<.001). Presence significant negative effect (β=–.11, SE .05; P=.03) positive stronger those high MIL. Temper (β=.08, .04; P=.04) Conclusions provides first findings large rural China. results have targeted interventions help male meaning.
