During the COVID-19 pandemic, many qualitative researchers were forced to alter their data collection methods as traditional face-to-face interviews and focus groups prohibited by social distancing requirements. While shift remote digital platforms has undoubtedly provided numerous benefits, such more flexibility reach, it also introduced new challenges, particularly risk of imposter participants, or dishonest false participants who fabricate identities exaggerate experiences join a study. Through reflection on two case studies, we identified several red flags, which categorized according phases research process-recruitment collection. Based provide recommendations for detecting preventing from impacting validity trustworthiness research. Researchers must routinely implement these technology becomes attractive avenue recruiting potential belonging populations often described "hard reach." However, problems are structural require institutional attention. We, therefore, pose academia, review boards, publishers, reviewers

Abstract Despite the various advantages of online surveys, such as their cost-effectiveness and broad reach, infiltration bots can result in data distortion, eroding trust hindering effective decision-making. Identifying bot responses within survey is paramount, epidemiologic public health researchers utilise tactics email authentication scrutiny response times, to detect fraudulent responses. This paper discusses authors’ experience spamming an survey, which skewed our findings. We discuss actions taken invalidate potential forms prevention. To responses, authors investigated time complete recruitment rates, invalid addresses, free-format Supplementary strategies, validation methods monitoring tools, complement reCAPTCHA systems alleviate adverse effects activity on accuracy. However, employing other that require challenges, or additional questions may reduce rate deter participants. Given advancing sophistication bots, ongoing innovation techniques imperative protect dependability accuracy future.
