Engagement with Conversational Agent-Enabled Interventions in Cardiometabolic Disease Self-Management: A Systematic Review (Preprint)

BACKGROUND
Well-designed
conversational
agents
can
improve
healthcare
capacity
to
meet
the
dynamic
and
complex
needs
of
people
self-managing
cardiometabolic
diseases
(CMD).
However,
a
lack
empirical
evidence
on
agent-enabled
intervention
design
features
their
impact
engagement
make
it
challenging
comprehensively
evaluate
effectiveness.
This
review
synthesizes
how
they
engagement,
inform
development
more
engaging
interventions
that
effectively
help
with
CMD
self-manage
condition.
OBJECTIVE
To
synthesize
pertaining

METHODS
Searches
were
conducted
in
Ovid
(Medline),
Web
Science,
Scopus
databases.
Inclusion
criteria
were;
Primary
research
studies;
Reporting
interventions;
That
included
measures
engagement;
In
adults
CMD.
Data
extraction
captured
perspectives
various
interventions.
RESULTS
Of
1366
studies
identified
for
screening,
20
review.
18
these
qualitative
or
quasi-experimental
evaluations
prototypes.
Five
domains
user
emerged;
Communication
style,
Functionality;
Accessibility;
Visual
appearance;
Personality.
CONCLUSIONS
Across
all
five
domains,
integrating
redundancy
anthropomorphism
as
effective
strategies
improving
by
increasing
autonomy
investment.
Future
should
adopt
are
inclusive
adaptive
diverse
users

unique
considerations
