Soil erosion in the Ethiopian Highlands is a critical environmental challenge, driven by both natural and anthropogenic factors such as deforestation, overgrazing, unsustainable agricultural practices, climatic variability. Addressing this issue essential for safeguarding region’s productivity, biodiversity, socio-economic stability. This review aims to synthesize evaluate existing research on extent, impacts, mitigation strategies of soil across Highlands, with focus informing sustainable land management practices policy interventions. The draws findings from 129 peer-reviewed studies reports, providing comprehensive national-scale assessment erosion. selected literature encompasses empirical field studies, remote sensing analyses, evaluations. reviewed highlights severe degradation, rates some areas exceeding 200 tonnes per hectare annually, resulting loss over 1.5 billion topsoil each year. degradation reduces productivity 5%–10% annually causes economic losses $1 billion, approximately 2% Ethiopia’s GDP. impacts extend water quality, rural livelihoods. Mitigation terracing, stone bunds, agroforestry have demonstrated potential reduce up 60%, stabilize slopes, enhance organic matter. underscores urgency integrated scalable approaches combat erosion, combining supportive frameworks, active community engagement.

Abstract Agroforestry, the integration of trees and shrubs into agricultural landscapes, has emerged as a promising strategy for enhancing smallholder agriculture in Ethiopia. The review’s overall objective was to examine impacts various agroforestry systems on country’s productivity, food security, environmental sustainability. However, synthesized fragmented evidence adopting among Ethiopian smallholders remains limited. review used combination qualitative quantitative methods investigate agroforestry’s impact agriculture, sustainability, adoption issues. A total 89 publications were included systematic review, focusing economic functions (n=40), (n=35), challenges (n=20). Agroforestry is land management that integrates trees, crops, livestock generate food, protect environment, provide habitats wildlife. findings showed provides such soil fertility improvement, biodiversity conservation, water carbon sequestration. Moreover, improves economy farmers by providing timber non-timber products result indicated key challenges, including socio-economic barriers, limited resource access, inadequate extension services, hinder widespread agroforestry. emphasize need targeted policies support mechanisms overcome these maximize potential contributing sustainable development concludes suggesting pathways enhance Ethiopia, emphasizing integrated approaches combining scientific innovations with local practices development.

Tropical agroforestry systems can mitigate climate change through carbon storage while supporting biodiversity and improving livelihoods. This study evaluates the potential of coffee in Gayo Highlands, Indonesia, to achieve levels comparable secondary primary forests. Vegetation data are collected across three locations, covering agroforestry, forest, forest. We found that forests had highest stocks, with 223.53 tC ha −1 Location 1, 194.68 2, 542.55 3. Coffee 1 stocks 3, it showed lowest stock (6.26 ). Higher were linked greater tree species richness, larger DBH, higher basal areas. Additionally, we observed a positive relationship between area aboveground stock, confirming values exhibit capacity. The findings underscore critical role mature trees highlight value preserving forest systems.
