Abstract Cumulative cultural evolution has been claimed to be a uniquely human phenomenon pivotal the biological success of our species. One plausible condition for cumulative emerge is individuals’ ability use social learning acquire know-how that they cannot easily innovate by themselves. It suggested chimpanzees may capable such learning, but this assertion remains largely untested. Here we show skill failed independently innovate. By teaching how solve sequential task (one chimpanzee in each two tested groups, n = 66) and using network-based diffusion analysis, found 14 naive learned operate puzzle box during preceding three months exposure all necessary materials. In conjunction, present evidence hypothesis sufficient new, complex after initial innovation.

Koops et al. (2022, 2023) claim that an experimental field study (Koops al., 2022) provided valid evidence against a latent solution explanation for chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus) nut cracking know-how in the wild. In our previous response (Tennie & Call, we identified two major problems with this interpretation. First, (2022) subjects were clearly unmotivated to access intended food reward (nut kernels) – rendering secondary question of whether they would use tools crack nuts these kernels moot point. Second, only one who came into contact setup was within most sensitive learning bracket develop (identified studies; Matsuzawa, 1994, 1996; Biro 2003). We concluded al.’s failed provide zone hypothesis as applied their reply, (2023) argued both critiques. Here, refocus debate, reiterate arguments and further invalidate conclusion “nut falls outside” solutions wild chimpanzees. end call more data.
