This paper discusses learner autonomy (LA), which has recently been adopted as an important educational goal in the new competence-based curriculum for general education Vietnam. Despite numerous studies on initiatives to foster LA various contexts, more research is needed substantiate literature how pre-service teachers interpret and practice so that they could better reach of fostering student school settings. Drawing data from surveys interviews with Years 1 4 across seven disciplines teacher programs, findings our case study indicate programs Vietnam may prepare enact their learning some extent. Nevertheless, such need provide to-be opportunities actually control university settings might assist students develop own independent self-study. thus concludes by raising two points concerning pedagogical obligation trainers should be aware of: first, relies substantially being supportive flexible devising activities; second, equip sufficient knowledge, skills resources enable future students’ independence.

This study investigates the implementation of autonomy in preschool and general education institutions Vietnam, aligning with global trends decentralized educational governance. School autonomy, intended to enhance flexibility improve outcomes, involves independent decision-making curriculum development, financial management, human resources. Data collection included surveys, in-depth interviews, seminars 388 participants (44 administrators 344 teachers) from high-quality schools Hanoi Ho Chi Minh City. The highlights several limitations: while 70.4% respondents agree that are granted organize manage activities, 67.3% affirm their authority design implement programs, only 13.6% report complete 8.3% personnel management. These constraints suggest financial, management is limited. Furthermore, sample size locations were explicitly chosen include City, reflecting a diversity urban settings. However, study’s limitations, including relatively small region-specific sample, may restrict generalizability findings other regions Vietnam. Future research should explore long-term impacts particularly diverse contexts outside major cities, develop sustainable models address these limitations.
