Abstract Praying mantids (Mantodea: Mantidae) are iconic insects that have captivated biologists for decades, especially the species with cannibalistic copulatory behavior. This behavior has been cited as evidence lack nociceptive capacities and cannot feel pain; however, this behaviorally-driven hypothesis never rigorously tested at genetic or functional level. To enable future studies of capabilities in mantids, we sequenced assembled a draft genome Chinese praying mantis ( Tenodera sinensis ) identified multiple classes ion channels by comparison to orthologous gene families Arthropoda. Our assembly - produced using PacBio HiFi reads is not chromosome-scale (Total size = 3.03Gb; N50 1.8Mb; 4966 contigs), but highly complete respect content (BUSCO 98.7% [odb10_insecta]). The our substantially larger than most other insects, consistent mantid genomes. We found present T. genome; they closely related those damp-wood termite Zootermopsis nevadensis ); some expanded while others contracted relative nearby lineages. findings suggest likely possess provide foundation experimentation regarding channel functions their consequences insect

ABSTRACT While there is no consensus about whether insects are sentient, the possibility alone raises an important question for zoos and aquariums. What ethical responsibilities, if any, do aquariums have concerning their feeder insects? There has been very little scholarly discussion of these questions. This not surprising, as scholars largely ignored animals. So, this paper takes up two tasks. First, it surveys main welfare‐focused questions associated with animals generally in particular. The aim here to identify considerations that bear on a full assessment ethics using resource, thereby facilitating future research. Second, interest making practical recommendations face significant moral complexity uncertainty, adopts standard institutional framework—the 3Rs—and considers its implications use insects.

Abstract The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals , standard reference work on animal research ethics in USA, interprets 3Rs as recommending “relative replacement,” where animals should be replaced by others that are “lower phylogenetic scale.” This means, instance, researchers use a Drosophila model instead mouse when they can. However, this may conflict with precautionary principle, which implies ought to give benefit doubt might sentient – which, face it, means treat like any other. So, principle seems imply not model. case study explores seeming tension, identifying powerful considerations support both replacing mice insects giving doubt. Then, it considers some ways forward based observation tension between is competing values. Both motivated same value: namely, minimizing unnecessary harm. deciding how proceed, engage broader harm/benefit analysis. In addition, do their best employ humane practices whichever species opt use. Information © Author 2025

Transparent reporting on the ethical treatment of research animals (e.g., implementation 3Rs, replace, reduce, and refine) is recommended when publishing in peer-reviewed literature. This meant to foster public trust, safeguard animal welfare, generate reproducible science. However, entomologists are not expected engage such reporting, as their subject legislated review. Recently, however, have reported increased concern about insects research, associated reproducibility trust issues. To what degree these increasing concerns reflected changes practices? We surveyed 15 high-impact journals that publish over 20 years collect data related including reduction methods, analgesics/anesthesia statements, information regarding sacrifice. Out 1359 sampled papers, no studies any methods reduce use. Over years, we found an increase proportion papers insect death a decrease significant invasive handling. 84% with handling or did report use anesthetics. also animal-treatment-specific ethics statements (from 0% 8%), largely driven by journal Animal Behaviour. end 1) making recommendations for looking improve practices 2) providing tools transparent research.
