What we know about parental monitoring today comes almost entirely from non-experimental studies linking to youth problem behavior. However, designs produce accurate findings only when there is no confounding of the association between and outcome interest. Using data on 11,880 ages 9-15 years old, show much confounding: 57 74 tested potential confounders were significantly associated with both behaviors. Together, explained 54-100% behavior across our analyses. We conclude that poses a major unaddressed threat validity previous monitoring, calling into question science its clinical applications.
