Abstract Phonological networks are representations of word forms and their phonological relationships with other words in a given language lexicon. A principle underlying the growth (or evolution) those is preferential attachment, or “rich-gets-richer” mechanisms, according to which many neighbors links) main beneficiaries future opportunities. Due limited number words, lexica constitute node-constrained where cannot keep increasing linear way; hence, attachment likely mitigated by certain factors. The present study investigated obsolescence effects (i.e., word’s finite timespan being active terms growth) an evolving network English as second language. It was found that neighborhoods constructed one large initial lexical spurt, followed sublinear spurts eventually lead very later during evolution. First-language-given neighborhood densities rarely reached even most advanced learners. An analysis strength between revealed tendency incorporate phonetically more distant at earlier acquisition stages. Overall, findings suggest effect favors younger words. Implications for second-language lexicon include leveraged learning mechanisms bouts focused on smaller range segments, involve questions concerning processing aging networks.
