Whose Um Voice is it Anyway? Leveraging “Thick Transcription” to Promote Inclusion in Qualitative Research Through Transcript Alignment

There
is
an
increasing
expectation
to
demonstrate
research
equity
awareness
which
charges
researchers
with
the
responsibility
methodologically
attend
issues
of
ethical
and
equitable
inclusion
in
qualitative
research.
While
many
strategies
toward
this
end
have
made
strides
improving
terms
enhancing
inclusive
participation
research,
little
evidence
available
guide
promoting
representation
We
examine
conceptual
practical
relevance
transcription
for
addressing
through
introduction
“transcript
alignment”
as
alternative
transcript
cleaning,
checking
reviewing
transcripts
verbatim
accuracy.
Practically,
alignment
addresses
seven
common
pitfalls
axio-analytic
neutrality
that
impact
representation:
missing
data,
mistaking
tidying
overlooking
shrinking
sanitizing
removing
data.
Integrating
into
their
practice,
can
reaffirm
naturalistic
tenet
“investigator
instrument,”
generate
“thick
transcription,”
ultimately
carry
forward
ethos
participant
throughout
data
analysis
presentation
activities.
Continued
assessment
refinement
application
concept
has
potential
enhance
conduct
across
all
phases
process.
