This paper examines posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans through the lens of hegemonic military masculinity (e.g., emotional toughness, strength, courage) as overarching social ecology life in which mental distress is experienced by service members. Three themes emerged from a focus group with medically released Canadian veteran men: (a) PTSD decided injury male soldiers reporting more than an individual or medical problem, but problem—a form “breaking ranks” fellow soldiers; (b) diagnosis creates intrapersonal and interpersonal dilemmas for that are directly result norms; (c) efforts to restore accepted masculinity, including resistance label, underpin their relationships peers family We argue applying ignores further erodes treasured masculinized identities distressed By recasting them injured patients, separated demonstrations masculine agency re-establishing themselves worthy members institution.
