ABSTRACT Background The depth of lung consolidation (≥ 1 and ≥ 3 cm) on thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) is increasingly used as a criterion for antimicrobial treatment. However, its association with bacterial infections remains unclear. Objectives To investigate the associations clinical ultrasonographic findings, particularly depth, opportunistic (OBI), viral infections, or Mycoplasma bovis (also known Mycoplasmopsis ) infections. Different definitions OBI were explored, based various combinations species, without neutrophilic profile cytology. Animals Eighty‐six group‐housed calves at least one sign respiratory disease from 19 herds experiencing epidemic. Methods Cross‐sectional study. A physical examination, TUS, non‐bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage performed. semi‐quantitative culture results Results Calves consolidations 0.5 cm had higher odds having an considering most definitions, M. isolation (odds ratio [OR] = 57.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.5–2300; p 0.03) agent in general (OR 15.5; CI 2.3–100; 0.01). all virus 15.6; 1.0–240; 0.05) 6.9; 1.7–28; Consolidation cm, cough, California score not significantly associated OBI, , both.
