Effect of frozen storage of bovine colostrum for up to 1 year on concentrations of immunoglobulins and insulin as well as bacterial counts DOI Creative Commons

Freezing colostrum is a common management strategy to ensure availability of high-quality for each calf. Limited data are available on the effects freezing important colostral components. The objective this study was investigate bovine at −20°C 1 yr concentrations IgG, IgA, IgM, and insulin, as well total aerobic bacteria (TPC) coliform counts (TCC). Composite samples (250 mL) were collected from complete first milking Holstein cows (n = 10), immediately cooled ice, divided into fourteen 8-mL aliquots. One aliquot stored ice analysis within 6 h collection (fresh) 13 additional aliquots frozen subsequent analyses upon thawing 21°C 24°C in 4-wk intervals. All analyzed Brix % via digital refractometer; IgM radial immunodiffusion; insulin radio immunoassay; TPC TCC commercial ready-to-use bacterial culture plates. Data using mixed repeated-measures ANOVA. Compared with fresh colostrum, 4.1% ± 0.9% 6.2% lower between 4 52 wk relative samples.
