We review neuroimaging research investigating self-referential processing (SRP), that is, how we respond to stimuli reference ourselves, prefaced by a lexical-thematic analysis of words indicative "self-feelings". consider SRP as occurring verbally (V-SRP) and non-verbally (NV-SRP), both in the controlled, "top-down" form introspective interoceptive tasks, respectively, well "bottom-up" spontaneous or automatic "mind wandering" "body occurs during resting state. Our leads us outline conceptual methodological framework for future briefly apply toward understanding certain psychological neurological disorders symptomatically associated with abnormal SRP. discussion is partly guided William James' original writings on consciousness self.

Neuroimaging has revolutionized our understanding of brain function and become an essential tool for researchers studying neurological disorders. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) electroencephalography (EEG) are two widely used neuroimaging techniques to review changes in activity. fMRI is a noninvasive technique that uses fields radio waves produce detailed images. An EEG records the brain’s electrical activity through electrodes placed on scalp. This overviews recent developments functional methods, including EEG. Recent advances technology, its application function, impact neuroscience research discussed. Advances technology applications analyzing neural oscillations also highlighted. In addition, advanced courses neuroimaging, such as diffusion tensor (DTI) transcranial stimulation (TES), described, along with their role connectivity, white matter tracts, potential treatments schizophrenia chronic pain. Application. The concludes by examining studies neurodevelopmental disorders autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity (ADHD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s (PD). We described direct current (tDCS) ASD, ADHD, AD, PD. have significantly provided insights into However, further EEG, MRI, TES necessary continue develop new diagnostic therapeutic strategies

Abstract The dynamic of the temporal correlations between brain areas, called functional connectivity (FC), undergoes complex transformations through life span. In this review, we aim to provide an overview these changes in nonpathological from fetal advanced age. After a brief description main methods, propose that FC development can be divided into four phases: first, before birth, strong change leads emergence proto‐networks, involving mainly within network short‐range connections. Then, during first years life, there is widespread organization networks which starts with segregation processes followed by continuous increase integration. Thereafter, adolescence early adulthood, refinement existing occurs, characterized integrative until about 40 years. Middle age constitutes pivotal period associated inversion trajectories decrease process conjunction large‐scale reorganization Studies suggest are line cognitive and sensory functions throughout as well their deterioration. During aging, results support notion dedifferentiation processes, refer selectivity regions, resulting more diffuse less specialized FC, disruption developmental aging accordance models neuroanatomy for latest matured regions deteriorate.

Migraine is a prevalent primary headache disorder and usually considered as benign. However, structural functional changes in the brain of individuals with migraine have been reported. High frequency white matter abnormalities, silent infarct-like lesions, volumetric both gray compared to controls demonstrated. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies found altered connectivity interictal ictal phase migraine. MR spectroscopy positron emission tomography suggest abnormal energy metabolism mitochondrial dysfunction, well other metabolic In this review, we provide brief overview neuroimaging that helped us characterize some these discuss their limitations, including small sample sizes poorly defined control groups. A better understanding alterations brains patients could help not only diagnosis but may potentially lead optimization targeted anti-migraine therapy.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative causing progressive cognitive decline until eventual death. AD affects millions of individuals worldwide in the absence effective treatment options, and its clinical causes are still uncertain. The onset dementia symptoms indicates severe neurodegeneration has already taken place. Therefore, diagnosis at an early stage essential as it results more therapy to slow progression. current relies on mental examinations brain imaging determine whether patients meet diagnostic criteria, biomedical research focuses finding associated biomarkers by using neuroimaging techniques. Multiple modalities emerged potential techniques study AD, showing range capacity their preciseness identify disease. This review presents advantages limitations for discusses value.

Voxel-based physiological (VBP) variables derived from blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) fMRI time-course variations include: amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF), fractional (fALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo). Although these BOLD-derived can detect between-group (e.g. disease vs control) spatial pattern differences, interpretations are not well established. The primary objective this study was to quantify correspondences between BOLD VBP PET measurements cerebral metabolic rate hemodynamics, being well-validated standards. To end, quantitative, whole-brain images glucose (MRGlu; 18FDG) (MRO2; 15OO), flow (BF; H215O) volume (BV; C15O) were obtained in 16 healthy controls. In the same subjects, time-courses for computation ALFF, fALFF ReHo images. compared pair-wise with variables. group-averaged, across-region analyses, ALFF corresponded significantly only BV (R = 0.64; p < 0.0001). most strongly MRGlu 0.79; 0.0001), but also (p 0.0001) MRO2 0.68), BF 0.68) (R=0.68). performed similarly fALFF, significant strong correspondence 0.78), 0.54), and, less 0.50) (R=0.50). Mutual information analyses further clarified interpretations. When conditioned by BV, retained no MRGlu, or information. MRO2, Of concern, however, strength PET-BOLD varied markedly brain region, which calls future investigation on at a per-subject basis.
