Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to derive connectivity (FC) between brain regions. Typically, blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast used. However, BOLD's reliance on neurovascular coupling poses challenges in reflecting activity accurately, leading reduced sensitivity white matter (WM). WM BOLD signals have long been considered physiological noise, although recent evidence shows that both stimulus-evoked and resting-state resemble those gray (GM), albeit smaller amplitude. We introduce apparent diffusion coefficient fMRI (ADC-fMRI) as a promising for GM FC, capturing activity-driven neuromorphological fluctuations. Our study compares BOLD-fMRI ADC-fMRI FC WM, showing mirrors GM, while more robust WM. displays higher average clustering node strength inter-subject similarity, compared BOLD. Taken together, this suggests reliable tool exploring incorporates nodes novel way. de Riedmatten et al. propose MRI assessing grey matter, addressing the limitations of activity. Their demonstrates methods provides measure, with similarity vascular making it alternative investigating whole-brain connectivity.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the topological properties of brain functional networks in patients with tinnitus varying durations. A total 51 (divided into recent‐onset (ROT) and persistent (PT) groups) 27 healthy controls (HC) were recruited. All participants underwent resting‐state MRI audiological assessments. Graph theory was used examine network topology. The results showed that ROT group exhibited lower clustering coefficient, gamma, sigma local efficiency compared both HC PT groups (all P < 0.05). Significant reductions nodal coefficient found left caudate nucleus olfactory cortex, while increased centralities observed orbital middle frontal gyrus postcentral Furthermore, had decreased right lenticular putamen reduced cortex HCs Additionally, weaker connectivity between subcortical occipital lobe modules, as well prefrontal intra‐frontal patients. However, intra‐module module stronger than HCs. These findings suggest is associated alterations topology, but many these changes are restored persistence tinnitus.
