Perspectives on SARS-CoV-2 Cases in Zoological Institutions

Severe
acute
respiratory
syndrome
coronavirus
2
(SARS-CoV-2)
infections
in
a
zoological
institution
were
initially
reported
March
2020.
Since
then,
at
least
94
peer-reviewed
cases
have
been
zoos
worldwide.
Among
the
affected
animals,
nonhuman
primates,
carnivores,
and
artiodactyls
appear
to
be
most
susceptible
infection,
with
Felidae
family
accounting
for
largest
number
of
cases.
Clinical
symptoms
tend
mild
across
taxa;
although,
certain
species
exhibit
increased
susceptibility
disease.
A
variety
diagnostic
tools
are
available,
allowing
initial
diagnostics
monitoring
infectious
risk.
Whilst
supportive
therapy
proves
sufficient
cases,
monoclonal
antibody
has
emerged
as
promising
additional
treatment
option.
Effective
transmission
SARS-CoV-2
some
raises
concerns
over
potential
spillover
formation
reservoirs.
The
occurrence
animal
may
contribute
emergence
variants
concern
due
altered
viral
evolutionary
constraints.
Consequently,
this
review
emphasizes
need
effective
biosecurity
measures
surveillance
strategies
prevent
control
institutions.

Abstract
White-tailed
deer
(
Odocoileus
virginianus
)
have
emerged
as
a
reservoir
host
for
SARS-CoV-2
given
their
susceptibility
to
infection
and
demonstrated
high
rates
of
seroprevalence
across
the
United
States.
As
circulates
within
free-ranging
white-tailed
populations,
there
is
risk
transmission
other
wildlife
species
even
back
human
population.
The
goal
this
study
was
determine
susceptibility,
shedding,
immune
response
North
American
elk
Cervus
elaphus
canadensis
experimental
with
SARS-CoV-2,
if
another
wide-ranging
cervid
could
potentially
serve
virus.
Here
we
demonstrate
that
while
do
not
develop
clinical
signs
disease,
they
neutralizing
antibody
infection,
suggesting
virus
capable
replicating
in
mammalian
host.
Additionally,
RNA
presence
medial
retropharyngeal
lymph
nodes
infected
three
weeks
after
infection.
Consistent
previous
observations
humans,
these
data
may
highlight
mechanism
viral
persistence
elk.

Abstract

Severe
acute
respiratory
syndrome
coronavirus
2
(SARS-CoV-2),
the
virus
responsible
for
COVID-19,
has
been
found
to
infect
various
domestic
and
wild
animal
species.
In
this
study,
convenience
serum
samples
from
575
bison,
180
elk,
147
wildlife
species
collected
between
2020
2023
several
regions
in
United
States
were
analyzed
presence
of
SARS-CoV-2-specific
antibodies.
Two
commercial
ELISA
assays
based
on
inhibition
SARS-CoV-2
receptor-binding
domain
(sVNT)
or
nucleocapsid
protein
(N-ELISA)
used.
Positive
sVNT
additionally
evaluated
using
a
conventional
neutralization
test
(VNT).
Our
results
indicated
that
1.2%
2.2%
4.1%
other
seropositive
sVNT,
whereas
4.2%
3.3%
1.4%
captive
tested
positive
by
N-ELISA.
Among
samples,
two
one
sample
five
(one
cheetah,
gorilla,
lions,
hippopotamus)
had
neutralizing
antibody
titers
VNT,
indicating
these
are
susceptible
infection.
These
findings
highlight
importance
broad
surveillance
efforts
effective
monitoring
non-human
hosts.

Low Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in Farmed and Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer in Florida

multiple
animal
species,
including
white-tailed
deer
(WTD),
raising
concerns
about
zoonotic
transmission,
particularly
environments
with
frequent
human
interactions.
To
understand
how
exposure
influences
SARS-CoV-2
infection
WTD,
we
compared
and
prevalence
between
farmed
free-ranging
populations
Florida.
We
also
examined
the
timing
viral
variants
WTD
relative
to
those
Florida’s
population.
Between
2020
2022,
collected
swabs
(N
=
366),
lung
tissue
245),
retropharyngeal
lymph
nodes
491),
serum
specimens
381)
from
410
524
WTD.
Specimens
were
analyzed
using
RT-qPCR
for
serological
assays
exposure.
was
less
than
1%
of
both
northern
Florida
(0.85%)
(0.76%)
No
possessed
virus-neutralizing
antibodies,
while
one
tested
positive
antibodies
(3.45%).
Viral
sequences
infected
matched
peaks
cases
circulating
variants,
indicating
human-to-deer
spillover
but
at
a
lower
frequency
reported
elsewhere.
Our
findings
suggest
reduced
risk
other
regions,
highlighting
need
further
research
on
transmission
dynamics
across
North
America.
