Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been detected in multiple animal species, including white-tailed deer (WTD), raising concerns about zoonotic transmission, particularly environments with frequent human interactions. To understand how exposure influences SARS-CoV-2 infection WTD, we compared and prevalence between farmed free-ranging populations Florida. We also examined the timing viral variants WTD relative to those Florida’s population. Between 2020 2022, collected swabs (N = 366), lung tissue 245), retropharyngeal lymph nodes 491), serum specimens 381) from 410 524 WTD. Specimens were analyzed using RT-qPCR for serological assays exposure. was less than 1% of both northern Florida (0.85%) (0.76%) No possessed virus-neutralizing antibodies, while one tested positive antibodies (3.45%). Viral sequences infected matched peaks cases circulating variants, indicating human-to-deer spillover but at a lower frequency reported elsewhere. Our findings suggest reduced risk other regions, highlighting need further research on transmission dynamics across North America.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in a zoological institution were initially reported March 2020. Since then, at least 94 peer-reviewed cases have been zoos worldwide. Among the affected animals, nonhuman primates, carnivores, and artiodactyls appear to be most susceptible infection, with Felidae family accounting for largest number of cases. Clinical symptoms tend mild across taxa; although, certain species exhibit increased susceptibility disease. A variety diagnostic tools are available, allowing initial diagnostics monitoring infectious risk. Whilst supportive therapy proves sufficient cases, monoclonal antibody has emerged as promising additional treatment option. Effective transmission SARS-CoV-2 some raises concerns over potential spillover formation reservoirs. The occurrence animal may contribute emergence variants concern due altered viral evolutionary constraints. Consequently, this review emphasizes need effective biosecurity measures surveillance strategies prevent control institutions.

Abstract White-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ) have emerged as a reservoir host for SARS-CoV-2 given their susceptibility to infection and demonstrated high rates of seroprevalence across the United States. As circulates within free-ranging white-tailed populations, there is risk transmission other wildlife species even back human population. The goal this study was determine susceptibility, shedding, immune response North American elk Cervus elaphus canadensis experimental with SARS-CoV-2, if another wide-ranging cervid could potentially serve virus. Here we demonstrate that while do not develop clinical signs disease, they neutralizing antibody infection, suggesting virus capable replicating in mammalian host. Additionally, RNA presence medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes infected three weeks after infection. Consistent previous observations humans, these data may highlight mechanism viral persistence elk.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for COVID-19, has been found to infect various domestic and wild animal species. In this study, convenience serum samples from 575 bison, 180 elk, 147 wildlife species collected between 2020 2023 several regions in United States were analyzed presence of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies. Two commercial ELISA assays based on inhibition SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain (sVNT) or nucleocapsid protein (N-ELISA) used. Positive sVNT additionally evaluated using a conventional neutralization test (VNT). Our results indicated that 1.2% 2.2% 4.1% other seropositive sVNT, whereas 4.2% 3.3% 1.4% captive tested positive by N-ELISA. Among samples, two one sample five (one cheetah, gorilla, lions, hippopotamus) had neutralizing antibody titers VNT, indicating these are susceptible infection. These findings highlight importance broad surveillance efforts effective monitoring non-human hosts.
