Abstract This study investigates the interactions between black soldier fly (BSF) larvae (Hermetia illucens) and foodborne pathogens, specifically Salmonella spp Escherichia coli (E. coli), to assess their impact on larval growth, welfare, bioconversion efficiency. BSF were reared substrates inoculated with varying combinations of these pathogens compared a control group. Results indicated that exposed individual treatments or E. exhibited significantly slower growth rates, achieving only about half weight by Day 9. Notably, exposure shortened stage while prolonging prepupal stage, suggesting metabolic stress. In contrast, combination both enhanced indicating complex microbial may benefit waste processing. The dynamics pathogen persistence revealed remained detectable in for up nine days, was present three highlighting larvae's potential mitigate levels organic waste. Despite resilience loads, negatively affected adult emergence raising concerns population sustainability overall health. These findings underscore importance optimizing rearing conditions implementing stringent quality measures minimize risks production systems.

Mealworms and black soldier fly (BSF) larvae are two of the most reared insects at an industrial scale. Both may feed on by-products from agricultural food industries. Feed efficiency is one important aspects such processes varies between species substrates depends metabolic performance larvae. Compared to each other, both hold advantageous capabilities affecting their efficiency, likely depending substrate. We mealworms BSF a diverse selection industries, quantified major rates across life spans, compared performances. The type had stronger effects growth than Generally, were in terms highest maximal specific rate (0.50–0.77 day−1) assimilation (0.81–1.16 shortest development period (23–25 days) but disadvantageous maintenance cost (0.07–0.21 day−1). In mealworms, 0.02–0.11 day−1, 0.16–0.37 was least 65–93 days, while only 0.02–0.05 day−1. contrast larvae, weight dependent lowest largest individuals. combined outcome these resulted average carbon net NGE*avg 0.16–0.40 0.33–0.56 span. It thus seems that more versatile somewhat efficient converting into mealworms. Differences affected substrate conversion efficiencies (i.e., ratio gain reduced substrates) impact overall insect farming.

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) produces sludge deposits needing further and handling to prevent pollution. Food beverage industry sludge, rich in organic matter nutrients, serves as a biomass source. Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) have degraded various materials, transforming nutritious waste into high-quality protein biomass. BSFL potentially converts when mixed with other nutrient sources like food waste. This study analyzes the effect of feeding rate composition on bioconversion milk creamer industrial sludge. The was collected from processing after screw filter pressing, belt pressing. substrates contained fruit-vegetable wastes, wastes (i.e., shrimps fish wastes), ratio 60:20:20, 60:10:30, 40:30:30, 40:20:40, 40:10:50, 50:25:25, 50:20:30, 50:10:40, 70:15:15 (in dry weight percentage). Moisture content kept at 65-85% pH 6.5-7. Feeding rates 10, 20, 30 mg matter/larva/day were assessed. Creamer particularly press is preferable for larval growth than industry. highest larva obtained containing wastes:fish 1:1, addition 50%, i.e., 0.250 gram WM/larva 17 days growth. In addition, recommended 10-20 matter/larva/day, sludges can be bio-converted using by combining it around 40-60%. offers alternatives sludges.

Dietary alternatives using insect-based products as an alternative for farm animal nutrition have been the object of study due to high nutritional value these feeds and costs related both their production consequently commercialization. Thus, use flies, especially larvae, has a content proteins lipids (fat), well minerals essential nutrients development growth, directly impacting animals, whether meat or milk. Therefore, objective this was compile data from literature on adults larvae Black soldier (Hermetia illucens) housefly (Musca domestica) dietary feed. The Prisma checklist used. After reviewing found in literature, following systematic review, it noted that studies emerge black flies domestic order Diptera obtain sources ruminants, addition obtaining rapid digestibility, thus adhering reproduction with content, incident levels protein, lipids, M. domestica Lucilia sericata, making target inclusion diet animals. Black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) (BSFL) are insect with significant ecological and economic value. This study aims to investigate whether swill manure had any effects on the transcriptome metabolome of BSFL. Through high-throughput sequencing, we found that fed exhibited higher levels gene expression, especially upregulation genes related energy metabolism, amino acid redox reactions. Metabolomics analysis showed a increase in metabolism-related metabolites, such as organic acids acids, swill-fed larvae. In contrast, expression metabolic characteristics pig manure-fed group indicated stress response, relevant metabolites (such short-chain fatty antioxidants) showing upregulation. GO KEGG enrichment analyses further supported these results, suggesting promotes larval growth whereas induces activation response mechanisms. These findings offer clear molecular physiological insights into optimization substrate selection for enhancing performance BSFL waste management.
