In the wake of economic and population growth, increased wastewater production poses a challenge related to sewage sludge treatment, which is problematic given its high moisture content, amount, hazardous characteristics. This study focuses on hydrothermal carbonization produce carbonous material–hydrochar, may be an alternative fossil fuels. The effect process parameters, namely, temperature (180, 240, 300 °C) duration time (30, 90, 180 min), hydrochar properties (proximate ultimate analysis, heating values) performance were studied. Obtained results indicate confirm that carbonization, especially increase, improves fuel carbonized sludge. highest low value was obtained for derived at °C in min (~23 MJ × kg−1). energy gain noted 240 (~23%). As well as relatively mass yield comparison other hydrochars, these parameters are considered most favorable carbonization. However, consumption (over 1300 kJ g−1) suggests more research process’s economical efficacy required.

Waste treatment and valorization have become crucial for sustainable development towards a circular economy. As an alternative, biochar production is promising process to convert wastes into valuable product that presents several potential applications cope with environmental problems. Biochar in recent years has been the subject of many studies, which leveraged number patents industrial interest this process. Against background, overview aimed: (i) identify advances research; (ii) assess on over years; (iii) look at worldwide; (iv) detect Brazil regarding waste biomass availability; (v) discuss contributing reach some Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The holistic analysis presented here suggests progress made research, patent development, implementation biochar, its role achieving certain SDGs noteworthy. Therefore, can be useful guiding future research about improve knowledge different branches field.
