Equine Herpesvirus-1 Induced Respiratory Disease in Dezhou Donkey Foals: Case Study from China, 2024

Equine
herpesvirus-1
(EHV-1)
is
a
significant
pathogen
that
causes
substantial
economic
losses
in
the
equine
industry
worldwide,
which
leads
to
severe
respiratory
diseases
and
abortions
horses.
However,
reports
of
EHV-1
infection
donkeys
are
limited,
particularly
China.
This
case
study
reported
an
EHV-1-induced
disease
Dezhou
donkey
foals
Shandong
Province,
China,
July
2024.
Three
one-month-old
exhibited
high
fever,
nasal
discharge,
distress,
with
100%
mortality
rate.
The
causative
agent,
strain
LC126,
was
isolated
from
foal
exhibiting
disease.
Phylogenetic
analysis
isolate
LC126
showed
close
similarity
EHV-1.
Overall,
our
revealed
can
cause
distress
as
well
death
donkeys.
underscores
emerging
threat
highlights
need
for
veterinarians
breeders
give
proper
attention
potential
outbreaks.

Equine
breeding
plays
an
essential
role
in
the
local
economic
development
of
many
countries,
and
it
has
experienced
rapid
growth
China
recent
years.
However,
equine
industry,
particularly
large-scale
donkey
farms,
faces
a
significant
challenge
with
pregnancy
losses.
Unfortunately,
there
is
lack
systematic
research
on
abortion
during
breeding.
Several
causes,
both
infectious
non-infectious,
losses
have
been
documented
equines.
The
causes
are
viruses,
bacteria,
parasites,
fungi.
Non-infectious
may
include
long
transportation,
ingestion
mycotoxins,
hormonal
disturbances,
twinning,
placentitis,
umbilical
length
torsion,
etc.
In
current
review,
we
discuss
transmission
routes,
diagnostic
methods,
control
measures
for
these
agents.
Early
detection
cause
appropriate
management
crucial
preventing
loss
practice.
This
review
aims
to
provide
comprehensive
understanding
potential
equines,
including
agents
non-infectious
factors.

inhibited
infection

cells
(NBL-6)
dose-dependent
manner.
Mechanistic

revealed

with
replication
at
multiple
stages

Furthermore,

interferon
response
through
