The notion that indigenous people and local communities can effectively prevent conservation crime rests upon the assumption they are informal guardians of natural resources. Although guardianship is a concept typically applied to “traditional” crimes, urban contexts, global North, it has great potential be combined with formal (such as ranger patrols) better protect wildlife, incentivize community participation in conservation, address limitations enforcement South. Proactive prevention especially important for illegal snare hunting, practice led pernicious defaunation which proved difficult control due its broad scope. This paper uses interview data members protected areas Viet Nam where hunting commonplace 1) analyze conditions study locations; 2) explore how become more effective guardians; 3) examine mechanisms linked maximize deterrence limit displacement snaring. Results indicate exist but respondent willingness intervene depends location, offender activity, type (outsider versus member). While respondents generated numerous strategies wildlife prevention, also listed mechanism offenders used avoid detection. We discuss integrated into an overall model situational community-led

The illegal wildlife trade (IWT) is a global issue that threatens the conservation of many species fauna and flora affects livelihoods people who are dependent upon wildlife. By far most common approach to tackling IWT enhance law enforcement, including arming rangers tougher penalties for perpetrators. Yet, critics this argue efforts reduce in source countries likely fail without involvement local people. However, little known about effectiveness community-based approaches or how being measured. Multiple demographic factors can affect ranger experiences and perceptions of their work, including like gender, age, income. Similarly, whether a is local to conservation area might influence the work. This premise, however, has received limited attention. In this study we use survey data from across 11 countries explore how being perceptions. We define rangers as originally within 20km area. Our findings suggest that corresponds more positive relations with communities. results also imply whilst not directly job satisfaction, may well enjoy higher satisfaction because they tend differ non-local in other characteristics (e.g., lower formal education; greater access familial support; amicable community relations). Moreover, our indicate experience certain symptoms associated challenging feeling worn out emotionally exhausted) regularly than rangers, which correspond welfare. all, further, in-depth research into versus could be useful. Examining links between especially valuable.

The lack of community involvement poses a significant obstacle that may impede the achievement success in conservation partnership program between Mount Merbabu National Park (MMNP) authority and local community. This study serves purpose presents new approach by investigating impact human social capital on engagement program, with mediation extension worker’s role. location was determined using purposive method, focusing primarily three villages surrounding MMNP, Indonesia. sampling technique employed simple random sampling, where 30 respondents were chosen from each village, resulting total sample size 90 respondents. examines variables Structural Equation Model (SEM) - Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. Abstract Interactions between law enforcement agents in conservation (e.g., rangers) and illegal resource users hunters) can be violent sometimes fatal, which negatively affects efforts people's well‐being. Models from social psychology, such as integrated threat theory (ITT) (intergroup interactions shape intergroup emotions, prejudices perceived threats leading to hostile attitudes or behaviors groups), are useful addressing interactions. Conservation approaches relying mainly on have never been investigated using this framework. Using a structured questionnaire, we collected data 282 rangers protected unprotected areas ( n = 50) northern Iran. We applied Bayesian structural equation modeling an assessment of rangers’ affective (i.e., emotions feelings that toward person object) hunters ITT Rangers’ positive perceptions were associated with anxiety (emotional response fear) negative stereotypes about hunter's personality, mediated the relationship contact attitudes. This suggests contact, verbal abuse, may lead perceive arrogant cruel, likely forms basis for threats. hunters, playing working together, lowered their realistic fear property damage). Perceived positively contacts physical harm). The associations identified suggest relationships based reduce prejudice. Thus, provided safe spaces interactions, help lower tension develop cooperative mechanisms.

Biodiversity, including wildlife, is gravely endangered by illegal activities within and outside protected areas. Harvest-Based Initiatives (HBI) were introduced to ensure local community access wildlife resources inside areas; are sustainably used beneficial both conservation communities. In this study, we examined the impact of harvest-based initiatives ranger perceptions on poaching in Ugalla Rungwa game reserves. Data extracted from six years anti-poaching patrol reports (2015–2020), where 576 selected (288 288 Ugalla). Using simple random sampling, 96 rangers interviewed determine effectiveness Results indicated that, between years, mean incidences unlawful harvest Game Reserve differed significantly. On other hand, perception HBI as cause reserves significantly two contrast, two-game was not statistically different. We recommend implementation sustainability
