Rare earth elements (REEs) are a new type of material resource which have attracted significant attention in recent years. REEs emerged as essential metals modern-day technology due to their unique functions. The long-term, large-scale mining and utilization rare earths has caused serious environmental pollution constitutes global health issue, raised concerns regarding the safety human health. Owing to their wide range of applications, limited availability, and high cost, the removal recovery REE have become an essential attractive process. Among divergent conventional method employed for removing recovering from wastewater streams, adsorption, ascribed its feasibility, low energy consumption, economic adaptability, received persistent attention. different biopolymers, chitosan, second most abundant, emerged as a preferential adsorbent owing characteristics which include non-toxicity, biodegradability, antimicrobial, excellent physiochemical properties, imparts adsorption capacity (∼85–100%), selectivity, surface area, porosity volume, chelating power, hydrophilicity. This review provides comprehensive overview recent literature on rare earth elements (REE) by chitosan.
