Background Many factors can influence circadian rhythms in animals. For acoustically communicating species, both abiotic cues (such as light and temperature) biotic the activity of other animals), timing signalling activity. Here we compare 24-h singing cricket Lebinthus luae laboratory field to assess whether presence insects influences rhythm. Methods Acoustic monitors were placed four localities Singapore number L. calls counted for 10 min each hour. Individuals from same captured recorded silence but with similar conditions (temperature cycle) they experience field, over 24 h was quantified. Results The pattern not significantly different between recordings. Singing peaked morning, a secondary peak afternoon smaller at night. In sang locations time diurnally cicadas, suggesting that sympatric cicada chorus did affect rhythm communication this species. niche partitioning could potentially explain ability call alongside cicadas: sings higher frequencies than unlike nocturnally species overlap cicadas frequency.

Birds use sound for conspecific communication. According to the acoustic niche hypothesis, they avoid signal competition with other species by partitioning in frequency and time. Others have observed introduced changing vocal behavior of native species; however, community-level effects multiple remain unknown. Hawai‘i, its legacy bird extinctions followed a surge human introductions, offers unique opportunity study between species. We predicted that communities higher percentages birds would exhibit more overlap members different due shorter time frames evolve partitioning. Using autonomous recording units, we recorded forest during summer montane primary secondary forests as well low-elevation agricultural site. Random samples recordings from each site were visualized spectrograms, all vocalizations ≥5 decibels above background noise identified labeled Frequency range proportion compared also used null model which randomized start vocalization within location over 500 iterations, then amount heterospecific randomizations recordings. While generally similar ranges, native-native pairs had significantly than introduced-native pairs. Additionally, incidence original tended be lower randomizations, but this difference was not significant, influenced percentage at The lack significant occurrence suggests space either spectrally or temporally, are strongly influencing Hawai‘i. However, may been consequence non-breeding season, future work should compare activity throughout year.
