A subarctic Norwegian watercourse is known for its population of threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus 1758) with unusual pelvic spine polymorphism; the upper lake contains a mixture specimens that are normal-spined, asymmetric-spined, and spineless. In contrast, downstream lakes nearby marine site contain only normal spined morph. We investigated maternal-line genetic structure in using mitogenomics. total 242 representing two were assessed based on individual pooled DNA sequencing. While distinct mitogenome clades detected (Lake Storvatnet), one these was present lake. The sample, however, contained several haplotypes. sequence features include gene-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms, molecular phylogeny, differentiation assessments pairwise comparisons samples from each site. Lake Storvatnet mitogenomes belong to Euro-North American (ENA) clades; ancestral lineages likely corresponds original maternal lineage watercourse, other introduced more recently. hypothesize second invader carried nuclear genomic responsible observed present-day polymorphism Storvatnet.
