This study estimated the effect of substituting fishmeal completely with cottonseed protein concentrate (CPC) in diet sturgeon (Acipenser schrenckii) on growth, digestive physiology, and hepatic gene expression. A control containing an experimental based CPC was designed. Columnaris disease is a prevalent in freshwater environments caused by the ubiquitous aquatic pathogen Flavobacterium species. Adhesion to external mucosal surfaces of fishes initial stage infection, and gills specifically have been identified as both primary target release site for this pathogen. Demonstrated here previous research, hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops x M. saxatilis), prominent United States aquaculture product, more susceptible infection with F. covae than maternal white (M. chrysops) parental To further elucidate mechanisms underlying differences resistance between these fish we examined gill gene expression profiles using RNA sequencing at different timepoints after infection. Patterns differential association key enrichment terms indicate effective immune response observed includes up-regulation multiple cytokines (IL-1β, IL-17C, TNF-α, G-CSF, IL-8, CCL16, CXCL9), hepcidin (HAMP HAMP2), ribosomal subunit components (e.g., RPL13), and, interestingly, down-regulation leptin (LEPA) during (1 – 4 h) stages Conversely, same genes was not detected until 24 h indicating delay that ultimately ineffective protecting host concurrent onset mortality fish. Collectively, presented results include several putative pathways candidate investigation toward characterizing defense (white bass) susceptibility (hybrid selective breeding efforts and/or biotechnological intervention.

Based on a four year study conducted in Cowichan Bay, Canada, potential linkages between composition and abundance of phytoplankton the feeding histopathology juvenile salmon were noted. During two dense blooms (Skeletonema spp. Pseudo-nitzschia spp.), Chinook decreased (n=202, empty stomachs >50%). All collected gills (n=5) damaged following high levels mechanically harmful Chaetoceros convolutus water column; all livers showed signs pathological changes during Octactis speculum bloom. These observations consistent with effects previously reported from farms, however this agreement must be treated caution as it is based limited number samples. We suggest that there need for comprehensive studies to evaluate role algae stressor wild fish coastal environment.
