Inhibitors of enzymes that inactivate amine neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin), such as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and monoamine oxidase (MAO), are thought to increase neurotransmitter levels widely used treat Parkinson's disease psychiatric disorders, yet the role these in regulating behavior remains unclear. Here, we investigated genetic loss a similar enzyme model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Because Ebony modifies inactivates neurotransmitters, its is assumed levels, increasing behaviors aggression courtship decreasing sleep. Indeed, ebony mutants have been described since 1960 "aggressive mutants," though this has not quantified. Using automated machine learning-based analyses, quantitatively confirmed exhibited increased aggressive boxing but also decreased Through tissue-specific knockdown, found ebony's was specific glia. Unexpectedly, direct measurement brains revealed their were reduced. Thus, anomalous for profile. We further only when fighting each other, wild-type controls. Moreover, fights between less likely end with clear winner than controls or In vs. control fights, more win. Together, results suggest exhibit prolonged context, an equally dominant opponent.

Abstract All organisms need to balance processes that consume energy against those produce energy. With an increase in biological complexity over evolutionary time, regulation of this has become much more complex, resulting specialization metabolic tasks between organelles, cells, organs, and the case eusocial organisms, individuals who comprise ‘superorganism.’ Exemplifying this, nurse honey bees maintain high abdominal lipids, while foragers have very low lipid stores, likely contributing efficient performance their social role, thus colony fitness. The proximate mechanisms responsible for these differences remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated effects age, age class, dietary macronutrients on activity fatty acid synthase (FAS), enzyme de novo synthesis acids. We found FAS declines as past peak nursing age. Feeding both nurses carbohydrates increased compared with starved bee, but, whether fed or starved, had higher than similarly treated foragers, implicating reduced one component foragers’ stores. Finally, used artificial diets different amounts protein fat precociously induce low, forager-like levels nurse-age deprived protein. speculate appetite consumption during nurse-forager transition is suppressed foragers. Summary statement Honey bee workers show capacity they leave nest forage. Young capacity.

Aging is a multifactorial process that occurs in all living organisms, including bees. One of the factors accelerating this stress caused bees by Varroa destructor. The research aim was to compare antioxidant system activities different tissues and fat body segments (sternite, tergite 3 5) workers aging naturally (physiologically) prematurely (affected V. destructor). CAT, GPx, GST, SOD were higher tissues/fat age groups compared workers. These increased with age, reaching maximum at 21 (in sternite) or 28 days hemolymph workers, then decreased oldest ones (at 35 age). In along age. highest identified 5, which may suggest its role detoxification processes. Our results are starting point for better understanding mechanisms related oxidative stress, aging, their correlation health lifespan

Sexual attraction and perception are crucial for mating reproductive success. In Drosophila melanogaster , the male-specific isoform of Fruitless (Fru), Fru M is a known master neuro-regulator innate courtship behavior to control sex pheromones in sensory neurons. Here, we show that non–sex-specific (Fru COM ) necessary pheromone biosynthesis hepatocyte-like oenocytes sexual attraction. Loss resulted adults with reduced levels cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), including pheromones, altered hydrophobicity. We further identify Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 ( Hnf4 as key target directing fatty acid conversion hydrocarbons. or depletion disrupts lipid homeostasis, resulting sex-dimorphic CHC profile differs from doublesex- transformer- dependent dimorphism. Thus, couples production separate organs regulate chemosensory communications ensure efficient behavior.
