ABSTRACT An accurate estimate of length stay is necessary to derive passage population size for birds using a migration stopover site. In this study, we used VHF tags and Motus automated telemetry array the 385 Western Sandpipers ( Calidris mauri ) migrating through two sites in British Columbia, Canada (Tofino Fraser River Estuary) over course seven periods (three northward four southward) from 2018 2021. The average at Tofino site on west coast Vancouver Island varied 2 6 days was shorter than Estuary, where 4 8 days. At both sites, adult had stopovers during southward migration, juvenile longer compared adults, with lower mass capture stopovers. Morphology adults juveniles between sites. Birds captured tarsi, as well higher Estuary. We also assessed prey availability found that invertebrate density greater Estuary migration. Variation minimum morphology suggests individuals different overwintering populations may use routes along North America. stopping have arrive heavier characteristics typical “hop” migrants who travel distances Different offer unique set by exhibiting varying strategies, highlighting importance conserving diversity locations.

Conservation policies have been formulated for coastal wetlands in China, and exploration of conservation effectiveness based on waterbirds their habitat is important guiding actions. We characterized the effects efforts shorebird diversity, area quality using long-term remote sensing data, survey data Yellow River Delta. From 1997 to 2021, area, population number significantly declined by 49.8% (r = −0.72, p < 0.05), 13.6% 0.05) 60.67% (R2 0.77, 0.05). Before 2012, (decreased 38.2%, r −0.62, > 0.05, slope −0.25), 10.53%, −0.68, −0.008), size (significantly decreased 94.5%, −0.95, −7874.3) declined, decline contributed reductions 0.79, Since (increased 14.3%, 0.71, 0.12), 17.12%, 0.83, 0.01), 8.34%, R2 0.29, slightly increased. The coefficients variation quality, were smaller after 2012 than before 2012. These results suggest that actions maintained stability waterbird populations habitat; additional are needed mediate other degraded habitats along wetlands.

The coastal wetlands along the southern coast of Sri Lanka are home to a diverse array shorebirds thriving in their natural habitats, classified under order Charadriiformes. This study examines impact land cover changes within Kalametiya Sanctuary, situated on coast, diversity, distribution, and habitat utilization migrant breeding resident shorebirds. Three distinct types were selected area: grassland, lagoon, mixed mangroves. Employing Geographic Information System (GIS) data these habitats from 2002 2023 analyzed using satellite imagery. Results indicated substantial decrease lagoon area by 70% grassland 30%, while mangrove saw an increase >90%. These attributed anthropogenic interventions events such as 2004 Tsunami. To determine shorebird assemblages changing surveys conducted May 2022 April at 30 fixed point-count stations transects types. A total 25 species belonging six families recorded. Notable among globally ‘Near Threatened’ Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa Great Thick-knee Esacus recurvirostris, alongside nationally threatened including Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus, Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica, Common Sterna hirundo species. mixed-mangrove exhibited highest abundance, with 19 recorded, surpassing 13 11 recorded respectively. Additionally, both demonstrated similar diversity indices shared more common (Shannon’s index [H] = 2.17; Jaccard Similarity Index 0.45) compared (H 2.09). Despite notable decline cover, during present study, it was observed that overall populations have been sustained utilized for feeding nesting. over-summering migratory utilizing habitats. Hence, sanctuary serves unique setting ecological resilience amidst human interventions. research provides valuable insights biodiversity conservation management face human-induced alterations ecosystems located especially pathways Both significant this which they use Thus, studying offers management, particularly species, alterations.

Protected areas are essential for the conservation of biodiversity. However, rapid expansion urbanization and intensification human activities have significantly disrupted environmental integrity, leading to a continuous deterioration in both quantity quality large ecological patches. This has further diminished connectivity among patches, significant consequences regional biodiversity conservation. Taking Poyang Lake as case study, which serves crucial wintering habitat migratory birds along East Asia-Australasia flyway, this research employs ArcMap technology. It considers various factors including land use type, slope, elevation evaluate degradation through application InVEST model. Additionally, study utilizes minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model alongside circuit theory delineate corridors within area establish comprehensive network system. The results paper follows. (i) During period from 2000 2020, there was an overall decline area, indicating clear trend degradation. it is worth noting that increase certain local protected area. (ii) values core bird reserve generally low. habitats shown consistent 2020. been decrease density during time period. (iii) Over number decreased their integrity functionality degraded. Consequently, weakened role had implications maintaining ecosystem service functions. findings indicate two conclusions. Ecological habitats. Strengthening control measures aimed at expanding can effectively safeguard flagship umbrella species, thereby promoting establishment help reconcile conflicts between efforts development objectives. reconciliation carries theoretical fostering harmonious coexistence humans Lake's sanctuary.
