Abstract As described by the temperature–size rule paradigm, fish living in warmer temperatures grow faster but have a smaller mature body size. However, changes size of communities western North Pacific, which is one most active fishing grounds, remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate assemblages Pacific and whether sizes were potentially driven rule, bottom‐up effects intra‐ interspecies competition at community scale. We evaluated weight data 6 stocks 4 species from 1978 2018 17 13 1995/1997 2018. Weight reduction assemblage was observed 1980s associated with biomass peak Japanese sardine ( Sardinops melanostictus ), indicating effect competition. Another 2010s, moderate increase chub mackerel Scomber japonicus ). Our analyses indicate that stronger stratifications surface layers during 2010s reduced nutrient supply subsurface layers. limitation food availability forced under biomass. findings underscore critical significance integrating impacts climate change on improve fishery management level.

Abstract Genome editing is a technology that can remarkably accelerate crop and animal breeding via artificial induction of desired traits with high accuracy. This study aimed to develop chub mackerel variety reduced aggression using an experimental system enables efficient egg collection genome editing. Sexual maturation control spawning season time were technologically facilitated by controlling the photoperiod water temperature rearing tank. In addition, appropriate low-temperature treatment conditions for delaying cleavage, shape glass capillary, injection site examined in detail order robust microinjection study. An arginine vasotocin receptor V1a2 ( ) knockout (KO) strain was developed reduce frequency cannibalistic behavior at fry stage. Video data analysis bioimage informatics quantified aggressive behavior, indicating significant 46% reduction (P = 0.0229) than wild type. Furthermore, KO strain, collisions wall oxygen consumption also decreased. Overall, manageable calm phenotype reported here potentially contribute development stable sustainable marine product.

Inter-annual variation in the feeding habits and food sources of Japanese sardine mackerel at age-0 age-1+ caught Kuroshio-Oyashio transition zone Western North Pacific were investigated based on analyses bulk stable isotopes ( δ 13 C, 15 N) amino acid nitrogen N AA ). Differences C between small for age-0, inter-annual trends similar, suggesting they depend similar same web this age. Context Fishing can reduce population biomass, allowing remaining individuals to grow faster and mature earlier because of greater resource availability, which potentially compensates for lost reproductive output over a shortened lifespan resulting from fishing mortality. Aims To compare life-history traits Nematalosa vlaminghi, long-lived (20 years), semi-anadromous fish endemic south-western Australia, in exploited unexploited populations living similar environments. Methods Populations were sampled 2016–2018. Total mortality (Z) was estimated using catch-curve analyses, annual recruitment variability. Maturation age length by logistic regression analysis. Growth curves fitted length-at-age data. Key results Compared the population, Z 2.6 times greater, juvenile growth more than twice as fast, maturity attained at least 3 years population. Conclusions Results supported hypothesis density-dependent processes. Environmental factors may also have contributed trait differences between populations. Implications Faster maturation partly compensate populations, although severe truncation owing is still likely decrease resilience this species, irrespective any compensatory

Abstract Chub mackerel ( Scomber japonicus , Scombridae) and blue australasicus ) are two important fishery resources in the western North Pacific that spawn eggs during same season. Although estimating total egg production (TEP) is for evaluating spawning stock biomass of species, it difficult to accurately identify formalin‐preserved collected ichthyoplankton surveys. Hence, a new identification criterion incorporates effects water temperature on size was developed this study. The diameter 37,304 over 16 years (2006–2021) measured, frequency distributions across sea surface (SST) ranges at 1°C interval were constructed. classified into groups using Gaussian mixture model; based results DNA analysis, small group chub mackerel, while large mackerel.
