Coastal marine sediments can be either major scrubbers or eutrophication contributors to surface waters. Standard methods for direct measurement of nutrient fluxes at the sediment-water interface do not consider hydrodynamic forcing although several ex-situ studies suggest that sediment resuspension dramatically increase dissolved fluxes. We provide a new model quantify phosphate (PO43−) flux (JR) based on physical representation its identified components: diffusion stimulation by exposure deeper layer with higher PO43− concentration in porewater (JD), pore water mixing overlying (JM) and net adsorption/desorption from suspended (JK). Abstract. The alkalinity dynamics in coastal environments play a crucial role controlling the global burial of carbonate minerals and ocean's capacity to sequester anthropogenic CO2. This study presents results from high vertical resolution profiles obtained during two summers temperate Chesapeake Bay estuary, enabling detailed investigation over salinity redox gradients, along with measurement speciation most redox-sensitive elements. Under oxygen-rich conditions, dissolution, primary production aerobic respiration explain evolution total (TA) versus dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), once adjusted for fresh oceanic water mixing. A significant flooding event 2018 promoted dissolution. In oxygen-depleted waters, we observed previously unreported 2.4 mol increase DIC per 1 TA production, which was consistent 2 years. Stoichiometric changes suggest that MnO2 reduction followed by Mn precipitation is responsible this characteristic signature, likely produced sediment pore then transferred column other by-products anoxic at onset summer. Our findings highlight critical potentially river-dominated where it can limit H2S oxidation SO42- promote sulfur burial.
