ABSTRACT Major threats to marine species and ecosystems include overfishing, invasive species, pollution climate change. The changing not only imposes direct through the impacts of severe heatwaves, cyclones ocean acidification but also complicates fisheries management by driving range shifts. dynamic nature these means that future our oceans will depend on ability adapt. This has led calls for genetic interventions focussed enhancing species' adaptive capacity, including translocations, restocking selective breeding. Assessing benefits risks such approaches requires an improved understanding architecture variation, in relation climate‐resilient phenotypes locally adapted populations fitness hybrids. Large structural variants as chromosomal inversions play important role local adaptation linking multiple loci. Consequently, are likely be particularly when managing capacity. However, under some circumstances, they accumulate deleterious mutations, potentially increasing risk inbreeding depression. Genetic takes account dual roles is more effective at ensuring population persistence. We summarise evolutionary factors influencing variation inversions, review found taxa, provide a framework predict consequences ignoring key scenarios. conclude describing practical methods bridge gap between theory application conservation.

Abstract The greater argentine is a benthopelagic fish with northern amphi-Atlantic and southern Arctic distribution. Landings of this species have been steadily increasing since the early 2000s, mainly for ultra-processed food. rising economic importance begs an accurate delineation management units needed to ensure sustainability fishery. alignment between biological was investigated on three ICES stocks in NE Atlantic (123a4, 5a14, 5b6a) by genotyping 88 ad hoc-developed SNPs 1299 individuals sampled along Norwegian coast, north Shetland, around Faroe Islands, Denmark Strait within Icelandic waters. Candidate loci positive selection were particularly crucial units’ supported current 5b6a 5a14 Islands Iceland, respectively. However, third stock investigated, 123a4, which corresponded sample from area 3a (Skagerrak) significantly different all remaining same stock. This differentiation advocates reconsideration present policy suggests considering Area as independent unit. environmental conditions Skagerrak left genetic print other marine taxa, could putatively be case argentine.

Abstract Background Genome-wide comparisons of populations are widely used to explore the patterns nucleotide diversity and sequence divergence provide knowledge on how natural selection genetic drift affect genome. In this study we have compared whole-genome sequencing data from Atlantic Pacific herring, two sister species that diverged about 2 million years ago, pattern differentiation between species. Results The genome comparison revealed high genome-wide but with islands remarkably low differentiation, as measured by an F ST analysis. However, observed in these is not caused interspecies ( d xy ) rather exceptionally estimated intraspecies π ). These regions elevated diversity, termed high-diversity study, enriched for repeats highly immune-related genes. This enrichment includes genes both adaptive immune system, such immunoglobulin, T-cell receptor major histocompatibility complex genes, well a substantial number role innate e.g. novel immune-type receptor, tripartite motif tumor necrosis factor Analysis long-read based assemblies herring individuals extensive copy variation genomic regions, indicating diversities were partially due cross-mapping short reads. Conclusions demonstrates characteristic feature trait loci herring. Another important implication blind spots classical screens using short-read data, only likely also other harboring qualitatively similar at loci. stood out because relatively baseline values

Adaptation to environmental variation caused by global climate change is a significant aspect of fisheries management and ecology. A reduction in ocean salinity visible near-shore areas, especially the Baltic Sea, where it affecting Atlantic cod population. Cod one most teleost species, with high ecological economical value worldwide. The population Sea has been traditionally divided into two subpopulations (western eastern) existing higher- lower-salinity waters, respectively. In recent decades, both have declined massively. One reasons for poor condition factors, including salinity. Thus, this study, an oligonucleotide microarray was applied explore differences between response fluctuations. For purpose, exposure experiment conducted consisting elevation reduction, gene expression measured gill tissue. We found 400 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved immune response, metabolism, programmed cell death, cytoskeleton, extracellular matrix that showed subpopulation-dependent pattern. These findings indicate osmoregulation complex process, western eastern respond differently changes.

Abstract Successful management requires information on pressures that threaten a species and areas where conservation actions are needed. The Baltic Proper harbour porpoise population was first listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2008. Now, 16 years later, there is no change status despite ample policy calling its protection an urgent need action to protect this population. Here, we provide overview current population, highlight knowledge gaps impact pressures, make recommendations anthropogenic activities. Based exceeded limit mortality, high concentrations contaminants Sea, combined with reductions prey availability increases underwater noise, it inferred likely still decreasing size becomes more urgent. As bycatch unprotected explosions result direct they must be reduced zero. Inputs contaminants, waste, existing emerging noise sources should minimised regulated.
